The film begins with a flashback from many years ago, around the time of the events in 1993’s The Wrong Trousers. Inventor Wallace and his dog, Gromit, caught the evil penguin, Feathers McGraw, from stealing a blue diamond. Feathers was found guilty and locked up in a zoo.
During the present day, Wallace gets ready with his usual inventions. Gromit goes to work in the garden. But Wallace introduces a gnome invention called Norbot, who does all the garden work for him instead. This dissatisfies Gromit.
That night, Norbot comes into Gromit’s room to recharge. However, he makes loud noises as he recharges, thus annoying Gromit. So, Gromit puts him in the basement and plugs him into the computer.
Meanwhile, Feathers McGraw finds a way to access the computer while the guard is sleeping. After he figures out Wallace’s password to his secret files, he hacks into his system and turns Norbot into an evil gnome. Later, there is an army of wicked gnomes.
The gnomes go around town. Gromit tries to warn Wallace about the gnomes and convince him (without words since he’s a dog) to check on them. But Wallace thinks everything will be fine.
Unfortunately, the neighbors complain about the gnomes destroying their property. Wallace is confused as to why this happened since he invented the gnomes to do good things.
If that’s not bad enough, two local police officers, Albert Mackintosh and PC Muckherjee, confiscate Wallace’s inventions for investigation. But they do not find the gnomes.
Poor Wallace now has to live without his inventions, which devastates him. Yet Gromit is willing to help him. He reclaims Wallace’s gnome-tracking device and discovers that the gnomes are at the same zoo Feathers has been locked up in. They are building a submarine to help Feathers escape.
While Gromit is hiding up in a tree to see what Feathers is up to, Feathers sees him and makes Norbot chop down the branch he is on. Both Gromit and Norbot fall. Norbot’s settings end up getting reset back to his good self.
Gromit then goes to the museum where the blue diamond belongs. But it turns out that Feathers swapped it with a turnip. And the diamond is actually in Wallace’s teapot at his house. Feathers had switched it when he was caught all those years ago.
After Gromit returns home, he discovers that the gnomes have tied Wallace to a chair and covered his mouth. They do the same to Gromit and escape.
Can Wallace and Gromit proceed with their mission to return the diamond and get Feather’s locked up again?
As with any Wallace & Gromit movie, this one had lots of humor. I laughed several times throughout it.
A great example was when the gnomes had Wallace relax by massaging him, putting a blanket on him while he was sitting on a chair, playing a lullaby, and giving him snooze chocolate before they started their evil plans. I admire how the gnomes were not stereotypically evil. They would pretend to be good in order to gain Wallace’s trust.
The fact that Gromit can’t speak and has no mouth plays a major role in this story. It’s his eyes that he uses to communicate with Wallace. Wallace has to figure out what Gromit is trying to let him know. Yet Gromit is still smart and tends to make better decisions than Wallace. I still like to see him as a friend or brother-figure to Wallace.
The gnomes were cute and funny before they turned evil. I particularly loved their adorable song about how no job is too small and why they need to work.
Another strength this film had was the inclusion of different races amongst the other characters. I admire how one of the cops that Wallace faced was an Indian woman. Since inclusive casting has become a trend in recent years, it is no surprise that the creators wanted to add diversity for this Claymation movie.
And, of course, with any good film, there are lots of twists and turns. The only weakness was that the beginning felt a little bit slow. But that is minor.
Overall, I enjoyed Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. It is a fun movie for people of all ages.
I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
