The story begins with a scientist who discovers an asteroid heading toward Earth. But a UFO is speeding alongside it.
The film then switches several years ago to Daffy Duck and Porky Pig when they were babies. A farmer named Jim adopts them and raises them throughout the years.
At some point, Farmer Jim leaves home, but unfortunately, dies. Daffy and Porky are on their own with the house.
Later, a cranky old lady, Mrs. Grecht, comes to Daffy and Porky’s house to inspect it. However, the inspection fails since their roof is broken.
Daffy and Porky realize that they need to get jobs in order to make more money. That way, they can afford to fix the roof.
But as they go through different jobs, they keep messing things up, thus getting fired. Later, they go to a diner and meet this pretty and smart pig, Petunia. Petunia offers them a job at a gum factory.
It is the first job in which they actually succeed. But there is a zombie-like man, who can only say, “Chew,” who infects the gum with a green substance. Daffy tries to warn everyone. But no one will believe him. Everybody considers him crazy, including Porky.
The infected gum is distributed everywhere and bought. Once people chew it, they turn into gum zombies, just like the man who mutated the gum at the factory.
Petunia is willing to investigate a gum sample. She discovers that an evil alien has contaminated the gum. She, Daffy, and Porky come up with a plan to get rid of the gum. That is to have everyone sniff a rotten egg scent, which will prompt them to spit out their gum, and then burn the gum with her flame thrower. It works for a while.
Unfortunately, the alien in charge of it takes the gum effects to the next level. People have transformed back into gum zombies. Even Petunia gets captured and turned into one.
Only Daffy and Porky remain unaffected. And everybody goes after them.
I will admit that this movie’s concept was a bit weird, especially for something that’s supposed to be kid friendly. However, the film had a good number of strong moments.
As usual, the characters’ relationships with each other were fantastic. I admired how sweet Petunia was. More importantly, I loved how she had the brains and was intelligent in science. This depicts her as a strong female character, something modern-day audiences want.
Farmer Jim was also sweet, although his character design style felt a little bit out of place compared to the other characters’ appearances. But that’s a minor flaw.
The pacing of this movie was a bit slow, too, at times. But as the tension levels increased, the pacing sped up.
And as a Looney Tunes film, it had a decent number of funny moments. One of them was when Daffy and Porky took a man on a horse to the airport and made him board while the plane was taking off.
Like any good movie, this one had lots of twists and turns, although some of them were a bit strange. Don’t worry. I won’t spoil them. But I was surprised to see that Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes characters did not appear in this movie.
Overall, I enjoyed The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie. I do recommend using caution if you have young children, say, under 8 years old. The concept of zombies may be a little scary for them.
But for everyone else, this movie is worth seeing.
I give the film 4 out of 5 stars.
