In this adaptation, based on the series from the 1960s, the family misses Uncle Fester. Then a man who looks like him claims to be him. However, he doesn’t remember much of his life. Morticia suspects that he is a fraud because of that.

Anyway, below are some moments in the film that stand out to me and why.

1: The Christmas songs at the beginning – especially the carolers

Yes, you read that right. Even during the logo openings, the song, “Carol of the Bells” plays in the background. Shortly after, there are carolers right outside the Addams’ door singing, “Deck the Halls.” Of course, the family is not thrilled.

This stands out to me because this is not a Christmas film. Plus, the family did not enjoy that. They don’t seem to appreciate Christmas spirit since they tried to dump something on the carolers.

I will also admit that I don’t have as much Christmas spirit during the holiday season compared to when I was a kid. Part of the reason is because the same Christmas songs are overplayed in public places. So, it gets tiring.

2: The slide scene

Some point after the middle of the movie, Gomez meets someone he hasn’t seen in a while. They end up going down a slide from the house together. During that moment, the song, “Say Say, Oh Playmate,” which is sped up, plays in the background.

I found that scene kind of amusing—especially going down a slide. The characters probably felt like children again.

3: The school play

Wednesday and Pugsley are going to perform in their school play. First, there is an act of kids dressed as flowers singing, “Getting to Know You,” from The King and I. Then Wednesday and Pugsley do a sword fight and bleed fake blood.

I will admit that the fake blood part was excessive. It grossed me out because it spurted like a sprinkler.

4: The ball

The Addams family holds a family ball. Aside from people dancing with each other, There are a few performances, such as stunts and a special dance.

What I enjoyed about this scene was how the characters interacted with each other. There was also a set of conjoined twins who shared the same love interest.

5: Cousin It

I don’t know how he ended up having hair flow down his entire body, including his face—or how he ended up with a high, squeaky voice and his own language. But he is unique. I loved when one of the guests at the ball developed feelings for him.

Conclusion

Despite these moments that stand out to me, I will say that I thought this movie was just okay. Part of the reason is because it was kind of confusing and hard to follow.

Maybe it’s because I’m not the most familiar with The Addams Family. I know a little bit about it. And I did enjoy the animated version from 2019.

But I give this adaptation 3 out of 5 stars.
