Over 20 years have passed since the events of Freaky Friday in 2003. Anna is now a single mom to a teenage girl named Harper. Tess is a lovable grandma who helps Anna with her parenting skills.

One morning, Anna tries to wake up Harper—only to discover that she went surfing. Tess and Anna give Harper a ride to school.

Harper dislikes this British exchange student, Lily. The two constantly fight and criticize each other. They bicker so much that in science class, a chemistry experiment overflows.

Anna and Eric, Lily’s father, meet with the principal, who ends up booking them a restaurant. For the next six months, Anna and Eric date.

However, Lily and Harper continue to fight and hate each other, despite how their parents are engaged. Lily does not want to move out of London, and Harper doesn’t want to leave Los Angeles.

At some point, Anna is having an engagement party. Several people come, including her high school friends, Maddie and Peg.

Yet Lily and Harper fail to get along even the slightest. Shortly after, a psych reader pulls Anna and Tess aside and does some kind of reading. Then she does the same thing for Harper and Lily.

That night, Lily and Harper have to share a couch to sleep on. This is to help them sort out their differences and teach them to appreciate each other.

But at midnight, something insane happens. Tess, Anna, Lily, and Harper all change bodies. This is shown by their sleeping positions changing.

The next morning, Harper wakes up in Anna’s body and Lily wakes up as Tess. She also has an American accent in Tess’s body.

Anna wakes up in Harper’s body and Tess wakes up in Lily’s body—and has an English accent. Of course, they all freak out.

But Anna and Tess (as Harper and Lily) know to act as the people they’ve “become.” They tell the same to Lily and Harper (as Tess and Anna). They also assume that there is a way to return to their bodies, just like they did several years ago.

“Lily” and “Harper” have to serve time in detention after a food fight that the real Harper and Lily had started a few days ago. “Tess” goes to a pickleball tournament. And “Anna” goes to dance lessons for her mother’s upcoming wedding.

All 4 women struggle in each other’s bodies. For example, “Tess” hates the experience of being elderly. She picks up a bunch of items for old people at a local store.

Meanwhile, “Harper” and “Lily” attend high school. “Harper” recognizes Mr. Bates, who was Anna’s English teacher back when she was a student.

Regardless of the stressful experiences of being in the wrong bodies, the 4 women start seeing some perks. For example, “Harper” and “Lily” get to eat junk food in ways they couldn’t have for a while.

Sometime later, “Anna” and “Tess” go into Starbucks, where they run into Anna’s high school sweetheart, Jake. “Tess” tries to get “Anna” to impress him. But that fails.

Eventually, they ask Jake if they could borrow his car. He gives them permission to do so.

“Tess” struggles to drive and ends up on the wrong side of the road. But she fixes that and takes “Anna” on a wild ride.

At some point, “Anna” and Eric go to get their marriage license. Despite how Harper and Lily wanted to break their parents up, the marriage gets approved.

When the rehearsal dinner is happening, and different people from Anna’s life are there (Including her younger brother, Harry, who has learned to accept her), “Tess” and “Anna” get into a fight. This prompts Eric to disengage her.

“Harper” is now sad thanks to that. They haven’t even returned to their real bodies, either.

What will happen next?

I was surprised with how exciting this film was. It kept my attention all the way through.

It also had enough backstories for it to stand on its own. But it was also nice seeing different characters from the previous installment return all grown up.

There is a lot I admired about the characters in this movie. Anna has grown from an irritable teenager to a concerning mother. She could be overprotective at times, too. For instance, she wouldn’t let Harper eat a doughnut because she considered it unhealthy. But she was also loving.

Tess has gone from a strict parent to a sweet grandma. I found it interesting that Harper called her Grams.

Harper was a believable and relatable teenager. So was Lily. It was crazy to see how much the two girls failed to get along.

Because of that, it was hard to find Anna’s relationship with Eric sweet. But I did appreciate how she still stayed in touch with Maddie and Peg. The three even played music together, just like they did when they were in high school.

Jake stayed similar to how he was in Freaky Friday, especially with his no-nonsense attitude. But he was still a good guy.

The ways the characters acted in the wrong bodies were humorous at times. For instance, “Harper” disciplined “Anna” and “Tess” by confiscating their phones because they came home late. That was kind of amusing.

The level of tension in this film was just right. It varied from the arguing between Lily and Harper as themselves to “Tess” driving incorrectly. I was surprised that she didn’t get pulled over by a cop. But then again, it’s a movie.

The pacing was quick, as well. And the scenes switched at the right times. Not one part lagged.

Like with any good film, this one had lots of twists and turns. See it to find out what they are.

Overall, I enjoyed Freakier Friday. It was a fun watch that pretty much anyone can enjoy.

Note that even though it’s rated PG, this movie has a few mildly profane words. I recommend that viewers be at least 8 years old. It’s also helpful to watch Freaky Friday before this one, if possible.

Anyway, I give this film 5 out of 5 stars.
