Two celebrity figure skaters, Jimmy MacElroy and Chazz Michael Michaels, are competing in a skating competition. They win medals but then pick a fight with each other. This causes them to be stripped of their awards and banned from competitive skating for the rest of their lives. Not only that, but Jimmy’s father disowns him and leaves him on the side of the road with his stuff.

A few years go by. The two men now have different jobs. Jimmy works in a sporting goods shop, and Chazz works as an actor for an ice theater.

Neither guy really enjoys his job. For instance, Chazz plays an evil wizard in a children’s ice musical. During one of the shows, he drinks in his costume to the point where he acts crazy and even throws up.

Meanwhile, Jimmy is helping a young girl try on ice skates. The girl’s father comes by and worries that Jimmy is making his daughter uncomfortable. But what he really wants is to skate.

Luckily, a guy called Hector reveals a loophole in a book section. If anyone is banned from the men’s single skating, they can technically still participate in other skating competitions, such as the one for pairs. Jimmy decides to compete in the pairs skating.

Jimmy and Chazz reunite at the ice theater. But they still do not get along and continue to fight. At some point, their former coach, Robert Goddard, decides to have them learn to appreciate each other.

Chazz and Jimmy stay in Coach Goddard’s house and have to share a room and even bunk beds. It takes time for them to stop arguing.

Coach Goddard begins to train the two very seriously. For example, he makes Chazz run on a treadmill while he and Jimmy eat dinner.

However, there are two siblings, Fairchild and Stranz Van Waldenberg, who want to ruin Jimmy and Chazz’s success chances. They see them perform well on the ice, and that dissatisfies them.

The siblings decide to have their younger sister, Katie, put them in jeopardy. And every time she resists, the older 2 force her even more.

When she meets Chazz and Jimmy, though, she and Jimmy fall in love. They even go on a date together.

But that disappoints her siblings. They demand that she does something harmful to Jimmy and Chazz.

Meanwhile, Chazz and Jimmy continue to practice their skating skills, including some insane stunts. But they still struggle with the extreme moves.

Sometime later, Katie pretends that she is a member of Chazz’s sex club. She even invites him to her hotel room so that she could “do” him.

However, Jimmy comes in and notices what’s about to happen. Katie and Chazz try to deny the whole thing. But Jimmy is not stupid enough to believe that.

If that’s not bad enough, Stranz and Fairchild abduct Jimmy and Chazz and secure them in different places. Then they go to the skating rink for the competition.

Can Jimmy and Chazz get freed and compete, as well, especially after all that training?

I will admit that the beginning of this film bored me a bit. And that lasted several minutes.

On the bright side, the first half got better once it approached the midpoint. And then the movie engaged me more after that. I also laughed at times. After all, this film is a comedy.

The tension levels were pretty high. I would constantly worry about what would happen with Jimmy and Chazz, particularly with Fairchild and Stranz trying to sabotage them.

However, I didn’t always find Jimmy or Chazz that interesting. In fact, I thought Coach Goddard was more intriguing with his strictness and no-nonsense attitude.

In fact, the actor who played him also portrayed Bob Parr in 2004’s The Incredibles and the same character in the 2018 sequel. That is Craig T. Nelson. I could hear that Mr. Incredible in his voice, especially when he was getting tough with Jimmy and Chazz.

Despite how Jimmy and Chazz were only okay in terms of characterization, I did admire Jimmy’s relationship with Katie. I found it sweet when they kissed after getting snow cones on their date.

The skating was fun to watch. I enjoyed seeing the skaters glide and jump in various ways.

I also found the kid’s ice show that Chazz was acting in cute. But when he vomited and got out of control, I considered it humorous when the audience booed at him and threw things. I do think he actually deserved that.

The backstory of the Van Waldenberg siblings was quite interesting. They lost their parents in their youth in a car accident. But the elder 2 blamed it on Katie.

I felt sorry for Katie a lot, especially when her siblings would make her do things that she knew was wrong. I loved hating Fairchild and Stranz.

Twists and turns occur, too. See the movie to find out what they are.

Overall, I thought Blades of Glory was decent. The main issue was how the story got boring at times, despite how I laughed.

I give this film 3.5 out of 5 stars.
