A science-passionate professor called Philip Brainard jumps out of bed and gets ready for work. He teaches science and art at Medfield College. He is also engaged to woman who works there, as well. Her name is Sara Jean Reynolds.

However, Philip gets too occupied with his science experiments at times. He has missed dates and marriage attempts with Sara because of that.

In fact, Sara waits for him at the church for a while since they’re supposed to get married. Meanwhile, Philip is in his lab. His robot mentor, Weebo, says that it’s now 6:30 A.M. on Saturday. He missed his wedding with Sara.

But he has created something that is like slime, but with lots of talents and skills. He calls it Flubber, a combination of the words, “flying” and “rubber.”

Flubber demonstrates what it can do. But it also gets out of hand and causes chaos around the neighborhood.

Later, Philip goes to work and sees Sara, who is mad at him for missing the wedding. She is now dating another faculty member, Wilson Croft.

At some point, a guy named Chester Hoenicker deals with his angry son, who is a Medfield student. His kid’s name is Bennett, and Bennett has failed some classes. He is now on academic probation.

Chester promises to find a way to get Bennett’s grades changed. He does not tolerate failure.

Philip continues to see what Flubber can do. It can do more things, including make Philip’s car fly.

Sometime later, Philip goes to a basketball game at the campus. However, Flubber is causing the home team to cheat. But no one else can tell so far.

Yet Sara finds out and gives Philip a hard time about that. Philip goes home, brokenhearted and mortified.

If that’s not bad enough, stakes rise even more. What will happen next?

I will admit that this movie did not engage me as much as I hoped. It was hard to follow at times, despite being only an hour and a half long. Some parts were also boring.

That being said, Robin Williams did a great job portraying Philip. Not only was Philip likable, but he was also smart and creative. In fact, Wikipedia says that Robin Williams’s parents worked as scientists.

Sara was also likable. I felt bad for her when Philip missed his wedding with her. But their relationship does eventually change.

The science elements were quite educational and entertaining at the same time. Weebo was especially memorable.

Not only did she speak to Philip, but she also played videos from different movies to communicate her feelings. Most of the films were Disney, except for The Simpsons.

You probably know that Disney did not own Fox back then. But seeing this movie in a time where they do feels like a major coincidence.

Twists and turns occur, as well. Some are happy, and some are sad.

But overall, I thought Flubber was just okay. The strengths and weaknesses were pretty much even.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars.
