When it comes to storytelling, including for films, many themes and concepts occur a lot. Sometimes, they are overdone. And a good amount of them are unrealistic.

Below are my reactions to a selection of cliches in movies that aren’t very credible.

1: Big, fancy breakfast on a school day

I never noticed this until others pointed it out. But it doesn’t make sense to prepare a big breakfast for your kids on a school day. They’re often in a hurry.

Another detail that someone spotted was how the food often gets little to no handling from the children. I don’t know why filmmakers like doing this. But it is a bit bizarre. Not only that, big fancy breakfasts on school days rarely play importance to the plots.

2: Love at first sight

This is definitely done a lot, especially in older movies. However, not only is it cliched, but love at first sight is also unlikely to last into a healthy relationship forever.

Yes, movies have limited time to tell their tales. But I could not imagine anyone I know experiencing love at first sight and then having a permanent romantic relationship with that other person.

3: The hero walking away from an explosion, unharmed

This is particularly common in action movies. But others pointed out how it’s really not possible.

Explosions can hurt you, even from a long distance. You could experience burns and need urgent hospitalization.

Yet then again, filmmakers focus more on the storylines.

4: A woman giving birth within 15 minutes or so

I’ve seen this movies a million times. However, this rarely happens in real life. Realistic labor can take several hours.

Yes, that would make the scenes less appealing in films. And I did learn that it is possible for a woman to give birth that quickly if the baby is not her firstborn. So, I actually understand this trope, even if it hardly ever happens in real life.

5: Deux Ex Machina moments

These are when someone or something comes out of nowhere to save the day just in time. Yes, it’s important for satisfactory moments to occur toward the end of the movies. But this cliche is starting to become less common in more recent stories thanks to it being discouraged. That I appreciate.

Conclusion

So, there you have it. These can especially be useful if you’re interested in pursuing storytelling paths, either as a hobby or a career. Even if you’re not, it’s still good to know about these.
