It’s February 1st, and a weatherman named Phil Connors talks about the weather. He also reveals that a blizzard is supposed to come. But it is likely to miss western Pennsylvania.

Despite considering himself a celebrity, Phil wants to leave his job and find something else. But the next day will change his life drastically.

The day after, it’s Groundhog Day. In the Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney, Phil wakes up at 6 A.M. to the song, “I Got You Babe,” as well as a weather report. He leaves his hotel room, gets coffee in the breakfast room, and leaves.

People are gathering at a park, where the famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, will be presented. The hosts will also announce if spring is coming early or if there will be 6 more weeks of winter.

Phil is on camera, and shares his opinion about winter. The groundhog is then presented, and everyone learns that there will be 6 more weeks of winter. However, Phil refuses to believe it.

Sometime later, he is trying to drive out of the town, despite the blizzard happening. But the tunnel to leave is closed.

The next day, Phil wakes up at 6 A.M. again and to “I Got You Babe.” Not only that, but he is also back in February 2nd. Therefore, it’s Groundhog Day again. Phil even experiences the same events as before. He realizes that he is going through déjà vu.

The following day, Phil wakes up to the same things and it being February 2nd. He discovers that he is stuck in a time loop. But no one else is aware of it. In fact, others consider Phil crazy when he tells them.

He informs this woman that he is in love with, Rita, about the time loop, hoping that she’ll believe him. Yet she doesn’t. But she does suggest that Phil sees a neurologist.

However, the doctor finds no issues. So, Phil sees a psychologist. Once again, that professional doesn’t find anything wrong.

Later, Phil is with some local guys and asks them what they would do if there was no tomorrow. Their answer is whatever they want. So, Phil gets drunk and drives wildly, including on train tracks. Of course, he and the other men get arrested.

But Phil wakes up in the same hotel and experiences February 2nd the next day again. He starts gaining more knowledge about the people in town. He even convinces Rita that he’s a god. But she won’t buy that. In fact, she won’t even love him back.

Poor Phil is heartbroken. If that’s not bad enough, he wakes up to February 2nd again and lives the same events. He can no longer take it. He actually tries to commit suicide, hoping that will end the time loop.

But can it be broken another way?

Despite being a comedy, this film didn’t make me laugh a lot. But it did keep me engaged.

The concept was interesting and creative. It was insane seeing Phil wake up to February 2nd several times. Regardless of how he lived the same events, though, changes were made each time. In fact, this movie had a lot of twists and turns.

As usual, the character development was strong. Phil was likable, but also flawed. I did adore his relationship with Rita. He also had some other friends, such as the enthusiastic Ned Ryerson. His ways of handling the time loop were quite believable.

The pacing was pretty quick, as well. Scenes also changed at the right times.

Although this may feel random, I thought the groundhog was very cute. He did bite some actors behind the scenes, though.

One flaw I had was how I wish this movie was funnier. I was told that it would make laugh a lot. But I only cracked up a few times.

Otherwise, Groundhog Day was a good watch. Note that even though it’s rated PG, it’s got some swearing and intimacy moments. So, it’s more like a PG-13 rated flick.

Anyway, I give this film 4 out of 5 stars.
