I’ve been going to the movie theater for pretty much my whole. The first film that I can remember seeing in the theater was Hercules in 1997, when I was 3. And that continued for the next several years.

Of course, during Covid, movie theaters were closed for a while. So, many flicks went straight to streaming during that time.

This post will talk about going to the cinema vs. streaming at home.

Going to the movie theater

The big screen, high volume, and extra dramatic and emotional effects are a plus. I often go if a friend invites me. I may also buy popcorn, candy, and a drink, despite how the food can be kind of pricy.

But then there are all those trailers you need to sit through before the film starts. Because of that, I’ve learned to accept that the movies will start 20 – 30 minutes after their scheduled times. Sometimes I’ve even arrived late to movies since I knew there would be lots of trailers and previews.

You also can’t pause, fast forward, rewind, or finish it later. And let’s not forget that a baby or small child may cry.

Streaming at home

You don’t have to leave with your vehicle or walk outside. You can just sit on your couch and pick up your remote. Or you can turn on your computer and go online – That’s what I do.

You also don’t have to deal with disruptive strangers, excessive amounts of trailers, or anything else you might consider to be a pitfall.

Another plus is that you usually spend less money. Of course, you may spend as much for Netflix or Disney Plus as you would for a movie ticket to the theater. But that one price covers everything they offer – movies, shows, and more.

If you purchase a film on Fandango or Amazon Prime, it’s usually about $10. But it’s much cheaper to rent, like around $4. I do that when I watch a movie I haven’t seen before. That’s because I don’t know if I’ll enjoy it.

What is another benefit? You can pause, fast forward, rewind, or come back later, unlike in the movie theater. I’ve actually been breaking up watching long movies into 2 days. And it helps. But more details about that will be for another post.

What’s the winner?

I prefer streaming at home. You don’t need to travel, spend as much money, deal with strangers, sit through numerous trailers, and you have more control.

Now for those who like going to the movie theater more, I respect your preference. I just see more benefits to streaming at home.
