The film begins with a public magic show, where the magician is having everyone reveal what’s on their playing cards. Then he calls up a volunteer, whom he and the other performers temporarily possess, but in a responsible way. They learn a lot about him.
The scene then switches to this group of people, presumably only in their 20s. They are Charlie Gees, Bosco Leroy, and June Rouclere. They goof around and have some fun for a little bit.
Then they come across this guy, J. Daniel Atlas. He demands that they steal the largest diamond in the world. It is called the “Heart Diamond,” and it currently belongs to this famous and wealthy woman, Veronika Vanderberg.
Meanwhile, while Veronica is doing her own thing, she gets a phone call from some creepy guy singing her a lullaby. Then he reveals that he’ll expose her crimes unless she gives up her diamond. This sets up lots of stakes.
Later, during a private party in Antwerp, Belgium, Daniel and some other illusionists try to steal the diamond. However, they fail, get caught, and chaos erupts thanks to that. Not only that, but their leader, Dylan Skrike, gets locked up.
At some point, the main trio goes to a chateau. There, they meet this friendly old man, Thaddeus Bradley.
In addition, they discover that magic runs in this place when they find themselves upside-down. Yet they continue their mission.
After some crazy magic tricks, including transforming one lady, Henley’s outfit into a flowing white dress, the group finds out Veronika’s illegal activities. But the police come and force them to separate. They also arrest June, Jack, and Merritt.
At the correction facility, the cops are about to lock up this old witch. But she fakes an injury to escape. And that “witch” turns out to be Lula May, who frees Jack and June since she’s on their side. Unfortunately, Merritt is unable to flee.
Shortly after, there is a party being held at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, for Veronika’s Formula One team. And of course, there’s a lot of security.
Still onto their mission, Bosco and Charlie convince the guards that they need something “important.” They even call June, who mimics Veronika’s voice to the man, and gives a green light.
Then Bosco steals Veronika’s car. This prompts the cops to chase him. Despite his attempts to escape from them, they win, and he gets arrested.
He and the others on his side get placed in a giant glass where sand falls. Everyone brainstorms ways on how to escape. But will those methods work?
Unlike certain thrillers, this one had lots of action, suspense, adventure, and magic. It also had a lot of action and tension, which can always keep the audience engaged.
I enjoyed the magic shows, the conflict, and the twists and turns. The pacing was also quick, which prevented me from getting bored.
Unfortunately, this film is not without its flaws. Even though it can stand on its own as the third installment, it was quite confusing and hard to follow. I will admit that I used Wikipedia to help me narrate parts of the first section of this post. Of course, all words were my own.
Another reason for its confusion was that there were so many POV characters. I couldn’t keep track of them all. They also had hardly any distinguishing traits. But maybe that was different in the previous films.
Scenes and points-of-view also switched too much. Yes, that’s necessarily in films. But in this case, it made the plot harder to understand.
Overall, I thought Now You See Me: Now You Don’t was decent. Even though the movie was engaging, it was too confusing, as well.
I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
