The film focuses on two teenage sisters: Taylor and Courtney Callum, who live with their widowed father. They are spoiled but have good intentions at times.
Taylor takes her road test. Despite breaking a lot of guidelines and distracting her examiner, she passes, thus earning her latest mom’s car.
However, she still struggles to drive properly. For instance, when she goes to see her friend, Jackson, on his farm, she accidentally forgets to put the parking brake on while borrowing Jackson’s truck. So, it rolls into a pond and sinks.
Later, Taylor and Courtney want to go shopping for Courtney’s party. However, one of them was cooking over a gas stove, and the other carelessly throws a towel onto it. This causes the house to catch fire.
Their dad has had enough of their lack of discipline. So, he cancels their credit card and decides to get them a job at his dairy farm. They will now need to earn their own money and learn the toughness of what they can afford with just that.
This also means that they must wake up at 5:30 A.M. Their father even plays a trumpet to wake them.
The girls are not looking forward to this. Even worse, they mess up too many times on the job. For example, Taylor unintentionally gets her phone into a cup of yoghurt.
During their lunch break, all the other employees give them dirty looks. They are unhappy with their inabilities to do the job properly, which can hurt the company. And if the company suffers, all the staff could lose their jobs.
Regardless of their poor first day, Taylor and Courtney improve themselves. Yet something else bad happens—the money is stolen from the businesses’ bank account.
No one knows who took it. But some people suspect that it’s Mr. Callum. Courtney and Taylor learn that it’s up to them to save the company.
Taylor realizes that Courtney’s party money could help pay the employees. So, she secretly takes it to pay them.
But when Courtney finds out, she is furious. Not only does she yell at Taylor, but she also avoids talking to her for a while.
The tension levels between the sisters get to the point where one of them unintentionally makes an error on the factory computer. This forces her to reset the dates for the milk, which is the same day.
After the milks are shipped, though, they get sent back because they have “expired.” But the staff still believe that they can save the company.
Where will that lead them to?
I was not surprised how much this movie engaged me. Regardless of the title, though, there was little in terms of cows. But I suppose it has to do with the dairy coming from cattle.
Yet I did read somewhere that the movie was about two sisters working on a dairy farm with actual cows and cleaning up manure. But that doesn’t happen.
There is a scene where one of Jackson’s cows gives birth. I thought it was cute.
Taylor and Jackson didn’t always get along. But they did fall in love later. Courtney became infatuated with a French boy, Phillipe, who would be staying in the US temporarily.
Taylor and Courtney were believable sisters with a credible relationship. In fact, the actresses who portrayed them were actually sisters. Their names are Aly and AJ Michalka.
And unlike many other films and shows, where the teenage characters are played by actors in their 20s and 30s, Aly and AJ were actual teenagers in this movie. That not only displays real adolescent talent, but also makes their characters feel more authentic.
Even though their father was likable, he did not always act believably. For instance, after Taylor and Courtney accidentally set the kitchen on fire, his reaction was too calm. Any real parent would completely lose their temper over something like that, even if they’re normally very patient.
Another flaw is how the pacing was a little too slow. The scenes and storyline were exciting. But less time than I thought passed per moment.
Otherwise, I enjoyed Cow Belles. It was a good movie that people of all ages can watch and learn from.
I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
