For many people passionate about movies, film awards are a big deal to them. It could be the Oscars or the Annies for animated features.

But I, personally, couldn’t care less about film awards. Why? The reasons are down below:

1: They may focus on areas I have little to no strong feelings about

The Oscars focus on things such as best directors, music scores, and actors. I usually discuss mostly literary elements in my reviews like conflict, pacing, and character development.

I do sometimes talk about features like acting and music (if the film is a musical). But even then, I use different approaches.

For example, when I judge the acting in my movie reviews, I’ll discuss things like a late 20-something playing a teenager or a typically comedic actor playing a serious role. I never focus on directing style from different directors or makeup and hairstyling.

The reasons are because I’m not good at judging those details. Of course, I would criticize makeup if it looked too scary or distracting. But I am unable to distinguish directing styles since I have pretty much no knowledge of them. For instance, I don’t know how Chris Columbus directs movies versus Steven Spielberg. So, I am not able to see a directing style at all.

That might change some day. But unless it does, don’t expect me to discuss directors or directing styles in my reviews. There are a lot of other people who do, though.

2: I don’t always agree with the picks

Many films that win awards are those I haven’t seen or plan to see. It could be because I’m too unfamiliar with that franchise or it’s a genre or plot that doesn’t exactly interest me.

Of course, that is not always the case. Some of the awards do go to movies that I enjoy. And that I appreciate.

But I am not always in the majority when it comes to popular films. Like I really don’t care that much about Lord of the Rings or the Mario franchise.

3: I’ve lost interest in live TV

Pretty much all of us have. We have streaming platforms where we can watch whatever we want. This includes live events.

Yes, I can watch the Oscar or Annie Awards on wherever it streams at whatever time works for me. But I rarely have interest in live events on screen. I didn’t even watch Rockin’ New Year’s Eve from 2025 going to 2026.

Conclusion

I’m not saying that I dislike competition. Of course, not. But those are the reasons film award shows don’t really interest me.
