The movie begins with Superman as an infant playing with Krypto, who is a puppy. But his parents send him away to Earth. Krypto joins him before he is blasted away in his little space capsule.

Years have passed. Superman is now an adult. Krypto wakes him up to do different things with him. They then go to the park.

A woman, Lois Lane, meets Superman. The two fall in love, leaving Krypto jealous. Even Superman hints at the idea of not caring a lot about him.

However, Superman gets kidnapped by the evil CEO of LexCorp, Lex Luther. He threatens to take away his powers and destroy him for good.

And as a surprise, other DC superheroes arrive, such as Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Batman. They try to help Superman battle against Lex Luther. Unfortunately, they lost. Not only that, but they are also all kidnapped and locked up in tanks, thus are unable to escape.

And if that’s not bad enough, Lex Luther removes all of Krypto’s powers. Thus, he feels powerless and worthless.

Krypto then finds a bunch of animals who never got adopted. He is unsure if he will save Superman and the other heroes. But a hologram of his late father tells him why he should. He and the other animals team up to rescue the heroes. The other animals gain superpowers as well.

However, a wicked, hairless guinea pig, Lulu, plans to destroy everyone so that she can take over the city. She even recruits a bunch of school guinea pigs and uses her powers to turn them evil and join her. They later attack civilians as the league of Super-Pets struggle to save the superheroes.

The trailer of this movie really drew me in. Although the beginning was a bit boring, the story got better after that.

One of the biggest perks of this film is the humor. I laughed a lot throughout it.

Some of the funny moments include:

  • Cryer’s Ice Cream, which Krypto eats when he is sad about Superman leaving him for Lois. It’s obviously based on Breyer’s Ice Cream.
  • How the turtle character, Merton, gained the power to speed. There is even a scene where he is fighting against an evil cat with his normal speed making everything around him “pause.”
  • When the gray dog, Ace, points out certain smells that Krypto finds strange.
  • How Lulu’s words translate to actual guinea pig sounds when she talks to people. Although that seems to change later.

The scene with Krypto’s dad in holographic form reminded me of that scene in The Lion King, when Simba sees Mufasa as a ghost who tells him what he needs to do. That was presumably the inspiration behind that moment.

His message to Krypto is how superpowers don’t define his strength, but his decisions do. It amused me how Krypto struggled to find things based on smell since that was new to him, unlike other dogs.

One part I found odd was how Krypto was still alive after how many years Superman was. According to Screenrant, Superman is supposed to be between his mid-20s and mid-30s. That is well over the typical lifespan of a dog (usually up to 15 years old), especially the size of Krypto. Bigger dogs don’t usually live past age 13, although there are some rare exceptions of those that do. And even then, they are so old that they rest all the time, are physically weaker, and have health problems due to aging.

But this is a cartoon. So, the fact that Krypto is likely the same as Superman and still functioning like a normal dog (excluding his superpowers) is probably a form of cartoon logic.

One thing I disliked, though, was having guinea pigs be evil, with the exception of Lulu being the villain. Batman even shot at them. As someone who once had guinea pigs as pets, I actually find this offensive since I see it as a way to inspire animal cruelty.

That being said, it didn’t detract me from the movie itself. Another flaw was how even though this movie is rated PG and supposed to be family-friendly, it has some profane language that is bleeped over. So, regardless of how the tone, animation style, and content is depicted in the trailer, I don’t think young children under 10 should watch this–at least not without adult supervision. Even Max, where I watched this film, has a content notice about it having adult language.

Overall, though, I enjoyed DC League of Super-Pets. It is a bit slow at times, but can keep the audience engaged with its action, humor, and characters. So, for the right audience, I think it’s a good movie.

I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars.
