A newlywed couple, Abby and Travis, are meeting with a resort staff member, Miguel, in Mexico, over their somewhat toxic relationship. They discuss what happened during the past few days since they married. This is where the events of the movie begin.
After a crazy night in Las Vegas around 6 days ago, Abby and Travis wake up as newlyweds, remembering none of the insane things from the day before due to drinking. They receive a call from a man, Benny. He tells them that they owe him debt from their poker game last night.
Shortly after, Abby, Travis, and another couple, America and Shepley, take a helicopter to a resort in Mexico for Abby and Travis’s honeymoon. They are greeted by the host, Sancho, a bunch of men who are part of a mariachi band, and three little girls who throw flower petals. They are then checked into their room.
That evening, Sancho offers a romantic dinner for Travis and Abby, which does not go very well. Part of the reason is because there is a sporting event on, and Travis wants to watch that. So, he tells Abby that he is not feeling well and joins Shepley in his room to watch the game. When Abby finds out, she is not happy. Shortly after, though, the resort loses power. Sancho entertains the 2 couples with a game of Twister and Charades.
While in the pool, Travis reconciles with Abby over what happened at dinner. For the next couple of days, Travis and Abby have fun with each other.
However, that goes downhill when Travis wakes up to find Abby learning to juggle with Miguel. This causes a little argument at breakfast. Unfortunately, Travis starts a fight with a bunch of others while on the beach, causing both him and Abby to get arrested.
Later, the two are bailed out of their facility cells. Travis then throws a bachelor party and invites his brothers to Mexico. Abby hosts a bachelorette party for her female friends.
While at the spa, Abby and America meet a woman who discusses their marriage, especially since Abby and Travis are both only 19 years old. Abby discovers that the lady is the mother of her ex, Parker Hayes.
While drunk, Abby sneaks out to Parker and takes selfies with him while he is asleep. The next day, chaos erupts between the main couples because of that.
I have to admit how funny this movie was. I laughed several times throughout it. One of the funniest scenes was when the mariachi band played “La Cucaracha” when Abby and Travis were having a private romantic moment.
Another funny part was when Shepley rescued some roosters who were part of a fighting tradition. When he let them out of their boxes, the background music was “Old McDonald,” something very unusual for an R-rated movie.
Despite the humor, the second half kept me less engaged, probably because there was less tension. Although I understand why the tension levels had to be lower, it ended up boring me a bit.
As an R-rated movie, Beautiful Wedding did include some iffy material, aside from typical mature content, such as swearing. One was a small insensitive cultural moment, although it was minor enough to not bother me after that. But another one grossed me out. It involved Abby doing something very unsanitary. I actually closed my eyes.
This film leans more toward the raunchy side of the R-rating. Aside from language, it contains intense intimacy, smoking, brief nudity, and topless women. I think viewers should be, at least, 17, and even 17-year-olds should be really mature for their age to see this movie. Even as an adult, some scenes went a little too far for me.
That being said, it still had a lot of great moments, such as the twists and turns. I was surprised to learn that Travis and Abby are just 19, especially since they drank and gambled in Vegas. But how they were able to do so while under 21 doesn’t bother me.
I am especially impressed with how Dylan Sprouse portrayed a 19-year-old character while in his 30s. It was also interesting to hear him use profanity after seeing him play a young teen boy in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody on the Disney Channel in the 2000s. But that’s what happens to pretty much everyone after they become adults.
Overall, I enjoyed Beautiful Wedding, and considered it a good watch, despite how it got mostly negative reviews from both the public and critics.
I give the film 4 out of 5 stars and would recommend it.
