All the muppets are taking their seats to watch the movie on how they all met each other. Then the film focuses on that.
Kermit is sitting in a swamp playing the banjo and singing, “Rainbow Connection.” Then, out of nowhere, a talent agent named Bernie offers him a contract to act in Hollywood. Desperate for change, Kermit takes the offer.
Shortly after, Kermit goes to a crazy pub and meets Fozzie Bear. They then take a road trip in Fozzie’s Studebaker.
However, along the way, they encounter entrepreneur Doc Hopper and his assistant, Max. They want Kermit to be the mascot for his fried frog legs company. Of course, Kermit refuses and leaves with Fozzie.
Later the two stop inside a church, where there is a rock band of different muppets playing, including:
– Dr. Teeth
– Animal
– Floyd Pepper
– Janice
– Zoot
– Lips
– Scooter the band manager
The whole band ends up going on the trip to Hollywood with Kermit and Fozzie.
At a fair, the group meets Miss Piggy, who falls in love with Kermit. She also joins the journey.
Later Kermit and Miss Piggy go on a date. But it gets interrupted when Doc Hopper kidnaps Miss Piggy. He also tries to kill Kermit.
The two escape. But the bad guys will not stop at anything to hurt them or the other muppets.
Although I was never a die-hard Muppets fan, I really enjoyed this movie. It was also funny at times. The muppets are actually intended to make audiences laugh. An example is when Animal thought he was told to eat the drums. So, he tried to do that. But he was really told to beat the drums.
I also loved the songs. My favorites are “Rainbow Connection” and “Movin’ Right Along.”
I am especially impressed with how the puppeteers were able to get the muppets to move realistically as if they weren’t controlled, particularly in the 1970s. Special effects like today’s didn’t exist. And as with any good movie, there is strong character development, twists, and turns.
That being said, there are a few flaws. One is how the idea of fried frog legs being presented at Kermit was a little too disturbing for a family-friendly flick. And there was some minor gun uses, also too much. But it might have been acceptable at the time of its release.
But overall, I enjoyed The Muppet Movie. I think it would make a good watch for people of all ages.
I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
