John Knox is a contract killer who works for a crime boss called Jericho.
While at the doctor’s office, Knox is unable to recognize a picture of a car. Shortly after, he is diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which is a form of dementia. He is told that he only has weeks left to live and that he will be forgetting things along the way.
During his job, Knox not only kills his target, but also a few other people. This eventually leads to an investigation by detectives Emily Ikari and Rale.
That evening, Knox’s son, Miles, comes to his house. Miles tearfully confesses to killing the man who raped his teenage daughter, Kaylee. He shows him the bandages with blood on them. But Knox tells him to stay quiet since he could be incriminated for this.
Knox later visits his friend, Xavier, who used to be a thief. The two brainstorm a plan to get Knox’s family locked up.
As the weeks progress, Knox’s dementia gets worse. He has trouble responding to people and remembering certain things.
At some point, Miles is arrested for killing the guy who did his daughter.
Things take a turn for the worst…
I will admit that this movie kept my attention more than I predicted. It has a strong beginning and is probably the only thriller that did not bore me as much.
Even though the characters usually talked quietly, just like in other thrillers, in this case, that did not reduce the tension levels. I also admire the concept of this film where a character suffers from dementia and is running out of time left to live.
However, even though this movie kept me engaged, the multiple POV-switching made it harder to follow the plot. I know it was necessary. But I feel like only half of the main plot was shown.
On the bright side, the scenes with the detectives were lighthearted. Some scenes have gun violence and blood. But it does not get too gruesome.
This movie is rated R for the content mentioned above, plus language, smoking, and intense intimacy. But since that material remained relatively mild, I think this film is good for ages 16 and up.
Overall, Knox Goes Away ended up not being so bad. My main issue was how the story was hard to follow. And unfortunately, that was a major issue for me.
I give this film 3 out of 5 stars.
