A black cat is wandering through a forest, meowing. It comes to a river, where a few dogs also are. But the cat fears the dogs. It also fears large white birds.
The cat sees a deer stampede as it escapes from the dogs. Then it gets caught in a flood. Luckily, it survives.
Later, the cat goes to the abandoned home where it sleeps every night. A yellow lab, which is part of the pack of dogs, follows it there. But the water levels are rising. The lab finds the other dogs on a boat and joins them. The cat goes on a boat with a capybara and lemur after climbing a statue to avoid the water.
The next day, the boat sails through a forest. The cat falls overboard due to being bothered by another large, white bird. Luckily, a mutated whale saves it from drowning – only for another white bird to grab the cat and fly away with it. While soaring, the cat notices big stone pillars. So, the bird releases it.
Shortly after, the water levels continue to rise. At night, the cat has a nightmare about a deer stampede.
During the day, the animals land on shore. The yellow lab meets them again. But they encounter the same white birds as before. They fight, which scares the cat and causes it to run away. One of the birds gets injured.
At some point, the animals arrive at an abandoned city. But chaos erupts, stressing out the cat.
I will admit how interesting this movie was. One major feature it has is that there is absolutely no dialogue whatsoever. The animals communicate through their natural sounds.
However, it is still easy to understand them and figure what they probably mean. For example, when a white bird is tormenting the cat, the yellow lab barks at it, suggesting it means, “Leave the cat alone.”
The animals remain very believable for their species too. But more importantly, they worked well as a team, helping one another, especially with no humans. Yes, this movie also lacks people as characters.
Yet, it remains beautiful and emotional. I constantly felt sorry for the cat when it got frightened.
The layout and concept of the film were executed well. Another fact that may surprise you was how there was no storyboard during the production. The animals were placed directly on the screen and explored with a camera. There were also no deleted scenes.
Overall, I enjoyed Flow. For the most part, it was engaging and fast-paced. The later part of the movie felt a little bit slower, though. But that’s a minor issue.
I give this film 4 out of 5 stars.
