The film begins with an Irish man lost in the forest. He gets attacked by a strange creature. Then he presumably dies.
The next scene switches to an American woman in Ireland, named Mina, walking on the streets. She goes into a store, where an employee asks her to take a golden conure parrot to a zoo near Belfast.
Mina drives toward that place – only to get stranded in a deep forest in the western part of the country. Her car breaks down, so she looks for someone to help her. Unfortunately, her car also vanishes.
Mina continues to look for somebody to aid her. She sees a strange woman. But that lady takes her into a shelter called the Coop with two other people. The person’s name is Madeline. The others are Ciara and Daniel. They have been stuck there for many months.
After every sunset, that group gathers in front of a big mirror for these creatures known as “the Watchers.” Mina learns about the watchers and how they want to look at her.
Madeline also tells her that there are some rules to follow: No going out after sunset, and no going into a burrow or the underground tunnel. This is when the watchers are more likely to attack.
During the day, the group helps each other out. While Daniel assists Mina, the two encounter a watcher. But they luckily escape from it, unharmed.
That night, Ciara hears her husband, John, at the door. She worries that he is in danger. But Madeline warns her that it’s a trick from a watcher. Ciara will not believe that. So, Madeline suggests asking him a question that only the real John would know. Ciara does that. But the voice outside says is doesn’t know the answer.
As the story progresses, stakes raise. Once winter comes, the group no longer gets along. For instance, Daniel shuts everyone out. They are all then stranded in the forest.
What will happen to them next?
I will admit that this movie bored me for the first several minutes. I think the reason was because the characters were too quiet, even though the tension levels were high enough.
Another issue was that the scenes switched too quickly. Even though I prefer fast-paced movies, this one overdid it. It actually made the story a little bit hard to follow at times.
On the bright side, there were some strengths. For example, there were a lot of twists and turns. The conflict also increased. It got to the point where I was curious about what would happen next.
The character development remained strong, as well. And despite it being a horror movie, it was not that scary. It is actually rated PG-13 and not R. But not all horror films are super frightening.
Overall, though, The Watchers was just okay. Most of the strengths happened later in the story.
I give this film 3 out of 5 stars.
