The film begins with a battle on a beach. Knights are riding horses and fighting with each other.

But that whole scene is just a dream from Allie Pennington, a teenage girl in a new town. Her parents are medieval literature scholars at a local university.

While unpacking in her new house, Allie finds out that her family will not be moving for another 3 years. She now feels confident that she will make friends and even make the high school track team. Her parents had previously moved every 6 months before.

Allie starts school and meets this kind boy, Will Wagner, who is on the football team. He also has a girlfriend named Jen and a friend called Lance.

Unfortunately, he also has a mean stepbrother, Marco. Marco picks on another student until Will intervenes.

Class begins. Allie has a history teacher named Mr. Moore, who is teaching the subject of King Arthur and his life. He assigns the students partners and a topic to research on.

Allie is assigned to work with this boy, Miles, who struggles to have a positive attitude. They are required to research the mythical Order of the Bear.

At home, Allie receives some help from her parents on the school project. They actually wrote a book on that subject.

At some point, Will invites Allie to a party. While there, though, she notices that Lance and Jen kiss each other. Not only that, but Marco also starts trouble in front of the other guests.

From the beginning, Allie saw a lot of coincidences from the King Arthur legend, such as Will being Arthur and Jen being Guinevere. The moment where Jen and Lance made out also mirrored what happened between Lancelot and Guinevere.

Allie is now concerned that history is repeating itself. She tries to warn Will about this. However, she constantly gets interrupted when trying to.

Miles thinks she’s crazy, despite how he has painful visions of the future. If that’s not bad enough, Will is caught “cheating” on a test in Mr. Moore’s class. He has a note attached to the bottom of his shoe that he didn’t know was there.

What is worse is that all the football players put notes on the bottoms of their shoes to mock Will. And the team is struggling, as well.

Stakes are rising and Allie is getting more stressed out. What is going to happen?

This movie kept me engaged all the way through. The pacing is fast and the scenes are neither too long nor too short.

The worldbuilding is also strong, especially the events that mirrored those from King Arthur. But I would say the strongest element is character development.

Allie was likable from the start. She wasn’t perfect, but she also wasn’t a jerk. She was helpful and patient with others, including Miles.

Her relationship with Will was also nice. I admired how she would invite him to run with her after school around town. He was also sweet with her.

Allie’s relationship with her parents was good too. I liked how the parents were kind and supportive. You don’t always see that in stories.

All the characters were well-developed with distinct personalities and flaws. In addition, the level of tension was just right.

One small issue I had was how there was not a lot of magic used in the film. But that didn’t ruin the story.

Like with any good movie, this one had a lot of twists and turns. See the film to find out what they are.

Overall, I enjoyed Avalon High. It was a good movie with memorable characters and strong worldbuilding.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
