This is part 2 of the story about the wicked witch of the west. Elphaba is now a feared enemy to everyone in Oz.
Meanwhile, Glinda is engaged to Fiyero. Nessarose is also the governor of Oz, and Boq is her servant. Madame Morrible is no longer the dean of students at Shiz University. Rather, she works for the wizard.
At some point, Elphaba goes to Nessarose. But their meeting doesn’t go well. While there, Elphaba accidentally transforms Boq into the Tin Man.
She also still thinks the wizard lies. She goes to him to have a face-to-face chat with him. Meanwhile, Glinda marries Fiyero.
However, when Elphaba finds that the wizard has been keeping animals in cages, she sets them free. They all crash Glinda and Fiyero’s wedding.
Glinda then goes to where the wizard is and convinces Elphaba to trust him. But she still won’t.
Later, Fiyero confesses to Glinda that he loves Elphaba, which leaves her heartbroken. Fiyero and Elphaba strengthen their relationship, even as a house comes flying into the air.
After Glinda helps Dorothy find the wizard and wishes her luck while she’s on the yellow-brick road, Elphaba meets her again. Dorothy’s house killed Nessarose. Elphaba is also unhappy about how Dorothy took Nessarose’s shoes. She and Glinda get into a fight.
Things get more intense from there.
Below are the strengths and weaknesses of Wicked: For Good.
Strengths
The songs
Like with the first part of the story, the songs remain enjoyable. Each one has a different mood.
There are also a few original songs not included in the Broadway adaptation. One is “No Place Like Home,” which is sung by Elphaba when she sees a bunch of animals trying to escape Oz.
There is also “The Girl in the Bubble,” sung by Glinda when she is sad about what is happening with Elphaba.
And of course, there is the number, “For Good,” which is sung by Glinda and Elphaba when Elphaba decides that she needs to leave the world.
The twists and turns
A lot of surprises occur during the movie. After all, it’s a prequel and spinoff of The Wizard of Oz.
For example, aside from Boq turning into the Tin Man, Fiyero eventually becomes the scarecrow. The lion cub from the first act has grown up into a cowardly being. Interestingly, they all meet and befriend Dorothy later.
Other twists and turns occur, as well. See the film to find out what they are. If you already saw the live show, whether it was on Broadway or elsewhere, you probably already know them.
The character development
All the characters continue to be explored and developed in this second act. Specifically, a lot of the screentime goes to Glinda and Elphaba. Glinda is popular but also goes through a lot of stress and tears. Elphaba is feared but remains supportive and friendly with Glinda.
A lot of the characters from the first part return in this one. Some are more major than others. But they are all memorable.
The pacing
For me to enjoy a movie, the pacing should be fast. And this one was no different.
The runtime is around two and a quarter hours long. But because it’s engaging and has fast pacing, it feels shorter.
Weaknesses
Some parts lagged
Despite the quick pacing that I mentioned before, there were some moments that lagged a bit. For example, the last several minutes were a little too slow. I was eagerly waiting for the story to end.
The plot was sometimes a little confusing
Although I admire the concept and premise of this tale, I will admit that it was a little bit hard to follow. Maybe it was because the points of view switched so much.
Yes, that was necessary. But it made me somewhat lost at times. That’s why my narration at the beginning of this post is kind of choppy.
An intimacy scene occurred
Yes, you read that right. And this film is rated PG.
Even though it isn’t actually shown, it is hinted at. Boq and Elphaba are undressed under a blanket at some point during the story. No inappropriate parts are shown or discussed. But I’m not sure if that’s really suitable for a PG-rated flick.
Overall Impression
Like with the first part from a year ago, this movie was great with a wonderful soundtrack and memorable characters.
Some changes were made from the Broadway show. But I don’t think it was a whole lot.
Overall, I enjoyed Wicked: For Good. It makes a fun watch for kids and adults alike.
I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
