Warning: contains spoilers***

As a big Harry Potter fan, there are a large number of details and moments that I have strong feelings about. The 6th installment, The Half-Blood Prince, is no different.

Like with any book-to-film adaptation, at least some content from the original source gets cut or changed. But some also stay.

Below are the top moments from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince that stand out to me and why.

1: When Slughorn was a chair

After Dumbledore and Harry leave London, they stop at Slughorn’s home. When they first arrive, Slughorn has been transformed into a chair. Then he turns back into a human.

This part stands out to me because it’s not that common for humans to turn into literal inanimate objects in films. Slughorn’s transformation back into a person was also interesting because during the process, he looked like a chair with a human head.

2: The Millennium Bridge

At the beginning of the movie, the death eaters are attacking people in London. One of the attacks happens on the Millenium Bridge.

When I first saw this film, I didn’t know what bridge that was specifically. But others have revealed it and pointed out how this is a “plot hole.” The Millenium Bridge did not come about until the year 2000. And Half-Blood Prince is set from 1996 to 1997. So, it shouldn’t have existed yet.

But the movies were shot during the 2000s. Other technology and things from that decade also appear in the films.

I guess this is just a form of movie logic.

3: When Harry had a crush on a waitress

While at the train station, Harry is reading a newspaper. A waitress starts getting interested in what he is reading. Then he almost asks her out.

This scene is not in the book at all—nothing about it. The whole moment, including the waitress, was strictly in the film only. Some fans are not pleased with it, either.

But I, personally, didn’t mind this scene. It shows Harry being brave and moving past his anxiety around girls. Previously, he’d said that he’d rather fight a dragon.

4: When Hagrid wasn’t there to see his hut on fire

Later in the film, right after Snape kills Dumbledore, the death eaters set Hagrid’s hut on fire. But Hagrid isn’t there to see it.

The next time he’s shown is when everyone is gathering by Dumbledore’s dead body. And it is not revealed, whether or not, he saw his hut in flames.

This was a bummer for me since I wanted to see how Hagrid would react to his home being on fire. In the book, he is actually there when the death eaters burn it. He even rescues his dog, Fang, from the burning hut.

I guess it’s up to viewers to assume if Hagrid saw his home in flames later, but it wasn’t shown.

5: When Ginny comforted Harry by Dumbledore’s dead body

When everybody at Hogwarts is crowded by Dumbledore’s corpse, Harry kneels by it and weeps. Ginny comes over to him and comforts him.

I found this moment to be very sweet. It wasn’t even in the book.

Movie Ginny gets a bad reputation for being underdeveloped and lame compared to how she was in the novels. For Half-Blood Prince, her unsatisfactory portrayal was no different to fans, despite having more screentime compared to the other films. People especially disliked when she tied Harry’s shoelaces.

But I’ve never seen or heard anyone share their opinions on her comforting Harry near Dumbledore’s deceased body. But I appreciate it. It likely shows her relationship with Harry growing.

6: The inferi scene

After Dumbledore and Harry go to a cave, Harry ends up in the water. He is then attacked by these revived dead bodies called the inferi.

The first time he was attacked was so sudden that it drastically spooked me. The inferi were also ugly and creepy. That makes this scene give me goosebumps.

7: When Snape killed Dumbledore

This is a major spoiler for anyone who is not familiar with the story. But most people probably know at this point.

Dumbledore’s death is a major milestone in the Harry Potter series. Dumbledore was not only the headmaster of Hogwarts, but also the most powerful wizard in the world, a useful mentor to Harry along with other characters. Seeing him die felt weird and sad.

If you’re familiar with the franchise, you likely know that Snape killing Dumbledore was planned for a while in the series’ universe. And it sets up how neither Harry, nor the rest of the wizarding world is safe anymore.

Conclusion

If you love Harry Potter, these moments might’ve stood out to you, too. You may either agree or disagree with my picks.

You probably are also aware of the Harry Potter TV series being produced and how it’s intended to be more faithful to the books.
