In Los Angeles, a black woman named Dreux Jones is working in a restaurant as a waitress. Something crazy happens in the kitchen. Otherwise, things are okay there.

Later, her friend and roommate, Alyssa, picks her up. Their conversation doesn’t exactly go that well, though.

But when they return to their apartment, they see the neighbors looking at them. When they get to their suite, they learn that the rent was not paid for. Alyssa’s boyfriend, Keshawn, forgot to pay it.

The landlord comes to their door and confirms that the rent was never paid. He gives Dreux and Alyssa till 6 P.M. that evening to pay the full amount. If they fail, they will be evicted.

The women assume that Keshawn used that money for something of his own. And they were right—he used it to invest in his T-shirt company.

They also track him down to the home of a lady named Bernice since he has cheated on her before. Berniece then seeks revenge.

Dreux and Alyssa decide to find ways to get that amount of money needed. The first thing they do is go to a walk-in place for a payday loan. A guy outside tries to warn them that it’s a scam and not to go inside. But they enter anyway.

Sadly, they are denied the loan due to their low credit scores. The lady assisting them even laughs about it.

Alyssa and Dreux then go to a blood donation center, where Dreux donates blood to get money. However, the nurse helping her is inexperienced. Alyssa does not like that and ends up getting into a fight with her. It causes Dreux to lose more blood and the bags in with they were supposed to be donated to. So, once again, they lost their opportunity to get money.

However, one of the staff members gives them vouchers for a certain fast-food restaurant nearby. Therefore, the two ladies go there and use them to order food.

But they run into this guy known as Maniac. Dreux used to flirt with him, so it’s kind of awkward to see him.

Alyssa thinks of a unique way to obtain money quickly. She decides to climb a pole and get some Air Jordans off some wires. Yet that scares Dreux and causes her to freak out. Not surprisingly, Alyssa falls. Then an ambulance comes.

Realizing that their hospital bill would cost a fortune, Dreux and Alyssa jump out of the ambulance and continue their mission—only for Dreux to realize that it’s almost time for her next job interview.

Dreux goes to the interview, and it goes well. However, Alyssa and some troubling people get into a fight nearby. Dreux has to break it up, which causes her to get physical, as well. This prompts the employer to change her mind about considering her.

On the way back to their apartment, Alyssa and Dreux get into an argument and decide to part ways with each other. Once they return, though, they see that their stuff is outside.

Can they fix things and pay the rent on time?

Despite how the trailer for this film barely engaged me, this movie kept my attention all the way through. I admired the concept and the plot a lot.

The story takes place in one day only. It also adds how much time remains before Alyssa and Dreux are evicted from their apartment.

The tension levels were high for the most part. I loved how the two main characters would try to find different ways to make money soon. And within several hours only. That’s what makes the storyline exciting.

Dreux and Alyssa made a great duo, even though they did fight at times. But otherwise, they were likable.

I felt like I could relate to Alyssa, actually, because she does fantastic paintings. I, too, enjoy doing art and painted a lot during my college years.

Another aspect I appreciate about this film is that it focuses a lot on African American culture. Most of the characters are black, including the main ones. I feel like this is good when it comes to being inclusive.

Although this film is classified as a comedy, I will admit that I didn’t laugh throughout it. And even though it’s around an hour and a half long, I found the pacing to be slow. Some scenes even lagged a bit.

Otherwise, I enjoyed One of Them Days. Note that this movie is rated R for excessive swearing, smoking, and some intimacy parts. I recommend that viewers be at least 16 years old.

I give this film 4.5 out of 5 stars.
