In outer space, an alien called the “Boov” gathers on a ship near Earth. There is one extraterrestrial that is unpopular, though. His name is Oh.
The Boov captain, Smek, announces that the entire race will be going to Earth. He even believes that humans are primitive and backwards, based on the footage he got of a baby.
The Boov aliens all go to Earth. While settling in different locations, they relocate the people to a specific area that has an amusement park.
Oh gets so excited that he tries to throw a housewarming party – except that no one will come. Yet he thinks a Boov called Kyle will attend because he considers him a friend.
However, Kyle declines the invite and tells Oh that he is not his friend. Even worse, Oh discovers that he sent his evite message to every alien – including the malicious Gorg that the Boov race thinks will hurt them.
Because of his error, Oh is turned on by every Boov. He is even considered a fugitive to the point where an aircraft knows and ejects him.
While on the run, Boov hides in a convenience store. He encounters a young teen girl named Gratuity Tucci, although she is usually called Tip. Regardless of how much help he needs, Tip refuses to aid Oh because his type abducted her mother.
But Oh notices that the car Tip was driving is damaged. So he repairs it, but includes unnecessary features, such as slush makers.
Oh is willing to assist Tip in finding her mom. But he is also trying to hide from his kind and wants to go to Antarctica, the only sanctuary.
However, he encounters Kyle, who demands that Oh gives him his email password. That way, the invite message can be stopped.
Sometime later, Oh and Tip head to Paris. Hidden in the Eifel Tower is a secret space for the Boov.
Oh and Tip go inside it. Oh tries to remember his password as little time remains until it’s too late to stop the evite. After an unsuccessful attempt, Oh tries again. Just one second before the time is up, he succeeds. Tip is proud of him.
Oh tries to locate Tip’s mother on a digital map. He learns that she is in Australia.
However, Smek wants Oh to be executed. Luckily, he has a special device that tilts the tower, letting both Tip and he escape.
Oh tells Tip that he no longer believes what Smek told him about humans being primitive. She accepts that.
At some point, Smek is even stripped of his position as captain. So, Oh becomes the new captain.
On their way to Australia, Oh and Tip have different types of conversations. However, they get attacked by Gorg drones. Unfortunately, it destroys the car. But Oh is able to fix it again.
Once in Australia, Oh and Tip continue to look for Tip’s mom. But she is nowhere to be found. In fact, people and aliens are trying to evacuate.
Oh does something that causes Tip to turn on him. She thinks that he was only pretending to help her in order to hide. Oh tries to convince her to trust him. But she won’t.
What will happen next?
I will admit that despite the strong premise and worldbuilding, the first half of this movie was a bit boring. Not only that, crazy things happened too often. Some scenes even felt random and not linear.
On the bright side, the second half got better thanks to the increased levels of tension, easier-to-understand storytelling, and the numerous twists and turns that happened. The character development was also strong.
I not only felt sorry for Oh, but also Tip. She states that even though she’s good at math, she is unpopular among her classmates at school. However, she was smart and did a lot to not only help Oh, but also teach him about human culture.
Another strength was how the mood was lighthearted. Even during tough times, the scenes didn’t feel too depressing or disturbing. It was likely due to the songs sung by Rihanna, who actually did the voice of Tip.
Which brings me to my next thought: I found her name choice to be odd. And there is no explanation to how she got that name. But that’s a minor issue.
Overall, I thought Home was decent. It actually received mostly mixed reviews from others online.
I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
