The film begins in the present day (1996 at the time). A man named Brock Lovett and his crew have a plan to go to the sunken Titanic to find a lost necklace. However, they come across a drawing of a naked young woman. That person is Rose Dawson Calvert.

Rose is about 101 years old and a survivor of the Titanic after it sank. She also has an adult granddaughter called Lizzy.

At some point, Rose shares her experience with the boat team about the Titanic before it sank. Everyone tunes in.

The story then switches to the year 1912. People from both America and Europe are boarding the Titanic. It will go to New York and allow its passengers to start a new life.

A widowed lady, Ruth Bukater, her 17-year-old daughter, Rose, and Rose’s fiance, Cal, come out of a car and board the ship. Simultaneously, an orphaned boy around Rose’s age, Jack Dawson, is also there.

Rose is unhappy with her engagement to Cal. Not only is she unable to love him, but he can also be abusive toward her. However, Ruth wants her to marry him so that they can maintain their wealth.

During dinner, Rose has a tough time. She runs to the deck and almost jumps off to take her own life… until Jack stops her. It takes a little time for Rose to listen. But she eventually does… except that her dress rips and she almost falls off the ship.

Some crewmembers come to see what is going on. They see that Rose is bleeding. They blame Jack for hurting her and arrest him. But Rose defends him and he is released from his handcuffs.

Rose and Jack form a bond. Although Ruth is engaged to Cal, she falls in love with Jack. However, her mother does not approve of him, even though he saved her life.

People continue to go about their business on the ship. Jack and Rose take their relationship to the next level, such as Jack making Rose feel like she’s flying over the water. Sometime later, Jack draws Rose while in the nude with nothing but her special necklace on. Shortly after, they invade Cal’s assistant’s cabin and do each other.

Unfortunately, the ship hits an iceberg. Everyone is now in danger.

Regardless of that, the evacuation process is slow. While some people go onto the deck to flee, some remain in the ship doing their own things.

Jack, however, has been arrested for possessing the special necklace. He is now chained to a column in a room.

The captain decides to have the women and children escape first. But Rose looks for Jack. She finds him, but has to figure out the right key to free him. It takes time as the water levels are rising inside.

After freeing him, the two go to the deck. Rose is told to join her mom and the other ladies. But she doesn’t want to leave Jack.

As she is lowered while in a smaller boat toward the water, she stares at Jack. Then she leaves the little boat and hops back onto the ship.

The ship is continuing to sink. Yet Rose and Jack run down the halls to search for something. Eventually, they are trapped behind bars with some other passengers. But they come up with a way to free themselves.

The ship’s sinking condition is getting so bad that people are jumping off and even falling off since it’s starting to tilt. Jack and Rose swim in the freezing water and end up with some other stranded passengers. Jack helps her onto an upside-down boat and tells her to continue to live.

A boat with some other survivors come where Rose and the others are. Unfortunately, except for Rose, everyone died, including Jack.

The boat leaves. But Rose grabs a whistle off a dead crewmember and blows it. That same boat comes back for her.

What will happen next?

This movie did a lot to keep me engaged, despite how it’s over 3 hours long. So, I watched bits of it within a few days.

It also has some mature content since it’s rated PG-13. There is a decent amount of foul language (but no F-word uses), an intimacy scene, and brief nudity, including a woman’s uncensored chest. I would recommend viewers be at least 14 or 15 to see this film.

But the romance between Jack and Rose was very sweet and beautiful. I adored it till the end. A strong part was when he made Rose “fly.”

It was so sad to see Jack die and sink into the ocean. He cared a lot about Rose and her wellbeing. She even revealed in 1996 that she had no pictures of him.

I disliked how Cal treated her. She said that she loved him, but he would often be harsh and unfair to her. I was glad when she finally decided to break up with him.

Rose’s mom, Ruth, was a gray character for me. She would care about Rose’s safety, but wouldn’t support her relationship with Jack.

As for the ship crew, I will admit that I couldn’t keep track of all their names and roles in the tale. There were a lot and they had little distinguishment in their appearances, personalities, and accents.

As for the evacuation, I found it odd that it was slow and not all the passengers were on deck at the moment. But you probably know that this was based on a real life event. So, it’s possible that the technology at the time was not advanced enough to get everyone out at once like it is today.

That scene was quite intense, tough, and sad – particularly when some of the passengers died from hypothermia due to being in cold water for too long. But thankfully, some of them did survive, aside from Rose.

Overall, I enjoyed Titanic. Despite its long runtime, the pacing and scene structures make it engaging and feel faster.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars.
