In a Lego universe, there is a powerful supernatural sorcerer called wizard Vitruvius. Vitruvius struggles to protect a mighty weapon known as the Kragle.
At some point, he discovers that a mysterious being, “the Special” will be able to destroy the Kragle—according to prophecies.
Eight years have passed. The scene switches to a bubbly ordinary man named Emmet Brickowski. He reads a book about how to be happy and follows along with it throughout the day.
He is also a construction worker, but not a very successful one. While at his job, he comes across this strange woman and develops feelings for her—only to fall into a pit shortly after. Then he approaches something strange called the Piece of Resistance and wants to touch it. That causes him to experience a bunch of unusual visions.
Right after that, an officer known as “bad cop” comes to penalize him. Emmet says that every show has a good cop, which the “bad cop” has on the other side of his head. But the bad side is stronger.
Simultaneously, the Piece of Resistance gets stuck onto Emmet’s back. Emmet also discovers that the wicked ruler, Business, wants to use the Kragle to freeze the world. Chaos begins to erupt… until the same lady that Emmet had interest in comes and rescues him. She reveals her identity as Wyldstyle and takes Emmet to the “Old West,” where Vitruvius is.
Wyldstyle tells Emmet to fit in. But he does it the wrong way by using stereotypical cowboy moves and words. Of course, that leads to unwanted attention from the real cowboys in the bar.
Vitruvius and Wyldstyle are Master Builders, meaning that they can construct things without manuals or instructions. However, Emmet cannot build like them.
Sometime later, Bad Cop returns. Luckily, Batman arrives, too, and can assist Emmet, Vitruvius, and Wyldstyle. The four go on a wild adventure while chasing and avoiding different bad guys.
Aside from that, Emmet also discovers that Batman is Wyldstyle’s boyfriend. He is kind of bummed since he was previously in love with her.
The four make it to this safe haven in the sky called “Cloud Cuckoo Land.” Different figures from different movies and franchises are there having fun. Their leader is a cute cat called Unikitty. She explains how there are no rules or responsibilities in this place.
However, Emmet ends up confessing to everybody that he isn’t a master builder. This disappoints them and thus, they turn on him.
Unfortunately, they go under attack shortly after by Business’s team. Cloud Cuckoo Land is now destroyed, and everyone there is stranded at sea in a submarine. Unikitty tries to stay positive by thinking of happy things, like cotton candy.
Emmet does have a double-decker couch that he made a while ago. Despite how the concept was considered bizarre to others, it ends up saving a bunch of figures.
Sadly, Business abuses his power and captures everybody on Emmet’s side. If that’s not bad enough, he throws the Piece of Resistance that Emmet has carried into the abyss nearby.
Everyone is ready to surrender. But can that change?
I was surprised with how much this film kept my attention. In addition, I laughed several times throughout it.
Some of the funny moments include when the characters made dumb decisions and this silly TV show centering around a guy who asks his wife where his pants are. But a big strength is seeing characters from different film franchises such as the DC universe, Lord of the Rings, and much more.
Emmet was a very likable character, even when he made a fool of himself. Even though he wasn’t a Master Builder, I considered him strong, brave, empathetic, and kind.
Wyldstyle was also likable as was Unikitty (she was definitely unique, as well), Batman, and many more. I enjoyed hating Business and Bad Cop along with the other villains.
The pacing was quick for the most part. And scenes switched at the right moments. I will admit, though, that some parts did lag a bit. But that is minor.
Another perk is the worldbuilding of a Lego universe. There is a lot that I admire about it. An example is how characters can remove their hair and then put it back on.
Although this film has a lot of action, it is not too intense or scary. There also isn’t any profanity. I think it is fine for kids as young as 6 or 7 to watch.
A lot of twists and turns occur, too—both happy and sad. See the movie to find out what they are.
Overall, I enjoyed The Lego Movie. It is a humorous and adventurous tale that both children and adults alike can enjoy.
I give this film 4 out of 5 stars.
