In 1926 New Orleans, a young woman named Tiana is working 2 different restaurant jobs as a waitress. She hopes to one day open her own restaurant.

However, at a ball, she kisses a frog and ends up turning into a frog herself. That frog is none other than Prince Naveen from Africa.

Together, Naveen and Tiana go on various adventurers in the swamp. Their goal is to break the curse and turn back into humans.

Below are the strengths and weaknesses I list about this movie:

Strengths 

Tiana as a character overall 

Not only is she Disney’s first black princess, but she is obviously a strong, determined female lead, differentiating her from Snow White and Cinderella, who are pretty much damsels-in-distress.

I admired how much she enjoyed her job as a waitress and her dream to open up her own restaurant. Falling in love with a prince or any other guy wasn’t one of her primary goals. She ended up that way with Naveem unintentionally.

The song, “Dig a Little Deeper”

Most of the songs in The Princess and the Frog are quite decent. They aren’t bad, but they are less memorable.

However, the song, “Dig a Little Deeper,” is a big exception. The catchy jazzy tune, the lyrics, and all the visuals are what make it exciting. And a special surprise is the magic lamp from Aladdin being snuck in as a hidden Easter egg during this number.

Tiana’s friendship with Charlotte

Not a lot of Disney princesses have human friends – particularly female ones. But I love how Tiana is one of the exceptions. And she is friends with a white woman, whose name is Charlotte.

Another strength is how Charlotte and Tiana have a lot of opposite personality traits. Charlotte is more naive and interested in romance, while Tiana is more focused on her career and goals. Yet their friendship remained strong.

Weaknesses 

The romanticism of being a waitress

When Tiana works at her restaurant, she is seen having an exciting time giving out food and interacting with the customers. Although that can happen in restaurants, unfortunately, being a waiter or waitress comes with its pitfalls. Customers can be impatient or rude, and chefs can yell at the waiters and waitresses, and vice versa.

Of course, all jobs will have drawbacks, along with benefits. For any child watching this, please note that there is more to working in a restaurant than what is shown from Tiana’s point-of-view.

Charlotte’s hair length changes when she dresses up

When her hair is down during casual times it is short and curled around her neck. But during formal events like the ball, her hair is in a tall updo, obviously adding more length.

It is possible that charlotte was wearing a fake hairpiece or a wig. But without any explanations, it looks like an animation inconsistency.

Overall impression

Even though it doesn’t rank in my top favorite Disney movies, I still enjoyed The Princess and the Frog. And I think people of all ages can like it as well.

I give this film 4 out of 5 stars.
