The year is 1897. In the European nation of Norvenia, there is a rumor that’s some strange trolls kidnapped a human baby.

However, those trolls are actually kind and legitimate. They are actually called boxtrolls since they wear boxes as their clothes.

Their leader, whose name is Fish, descides to raise the infant. He also chooses to name the child Eggs.

Through the years, Eggs noices that many of the trolls get kidnapped by this wicked exterminator called Archibald Snatcher. When stakes rise, however, Eggs does meet this girl around his age named Winifred. She will do everything possible to save the trolls, especially Fish.

At some point, Eggs learns about his father, Herbert, who was friends with Snatcher. That includes why eggs was kidnapped as an infant.

Crazy things occur as Eggs and Winnie continue their mission. What will eventually happen?

This movie was made by Laika, the same film company that produced 2012’s ParaNorman. Because of that, I was hoping that I would find it funny and engaging as well as adventurous and suspenseful.

Unfortunately, that did not happen. Regardless of the good concept, this movie ended up boring me a lot.

In addition, the plot was a little too predictable, and certain parts were too gross. I covered up more disgusting moments than I would have predicted.

I was also unable to finish the movie. I stopped before the midpoint even happened.

On the bright side, I did find the character designs quite interesting. I particularly admire the idea of making trolls good guys instead of villains. This strays away from the traditional trope of trolls being evil.

Yet overall, The Boxtrolls did not work out for me like I hoped. But there might be other films by Laika that will please me – aside from ParaNorman.

But I give The Boxtrolls 2 out of 5 stars.
