The year is 2029. There is a chimpanzee named Pericles, who is in a spaceship freaking out.

His noises get so out of hand that his owner, Leo, has to use tough love to calm him down. He warns him that if he can’t control himself, he won’t get a treat.

His assistant, Stella, thinks he is being too tough on him, though. But shortly after, Pericles ends up traveling into the future thanks to a dangerous electromagnetic storm.

Leo goes to the future, too, by using another pod to travel through space. He is desperate to find Pericles – even though he is not authorized to just take another pod.

Pericles is now in the year 5021. Not only that, but he is also on a planet that is ruled purely by apes. The planet is called Ashlar.

What’s even more surprising is that humans are slaves to the apes. But when Leo finally arrives, he will not let that shocking standard get in his way in order to find Pericles.

While there, he meets a female chimpanzee named Ari, who is also against humans being forced to serve the apes. Ari buys him and a woman named Daena. They will be servants in her father’s home.

At some point, Leo escapes and finally frees some other humans. However, crazy things happen from there on.

Despite the strong concept of the story, it didn’t exactly work out for me. One reason is because Pericles was a bit too unlikable at the beginning.

Yes, he’s a chimpanzee and chimps have high voices. But it was quite tough on my ears and lasted a bit too long.

Some parts were fine, though. For instance, I admired the CGI designs of the apes who dwelled on Ashlar. It was pretty advanced for the early 2000s.

The scene where Leo freed some people was also quite satisfying. In addition, I liked watching Mark Wahlberg on screen when he was only 29 to 30 years old. This was over a decade before he was in the comedy Ted, which came out in 2012.

But overall, Planet of the Apes did not please me as much as I hoped. For some reason, much of it actually bored me.

In fact, it got a lot of negative reviews amongst critics and the general public.

I give this movie 2.5 out of 5 stars.
