In Australia during the late 19th century, a young woman named Sybilla is starting to write a book. But then she must go help her family with various chores.

Later, while she is playing the piano in her house, Sybilla is interrupted by her mom. Her mother tells her that the family is suffering financially. So, Sybilla really can’t stay much longer.

Her mom wants her to get married. But Sybilla is absolutely uninterested. She wants a career playing music instead, which no one else agrees with.

At some point, Sybilla is sent to stay with her grandma, who welcomes her warmly. She also spends a lot of time with her aunt, Helen, who is even there for her during her worst.

Despite her wish not to marry, Sybilla ends up meeting and falling in love with a guy called Harry. The 2 spend a lot of quality time together.

They walk around the fields, go on a small boat, and even have a wild pillow fight with each other while outside.

However, a man named Frank hurts Sybilla and Harry’s relationship. This causes the 2 to constantly fight.

Sybilla is also forced to work as a housekeeper for a highly poor family. But she is still determined to pursue a career in music.

What will happen next?

Even though the beginning was kind of dull, the story became more exciting afterward. I rooted for Sybilla to follow her dreams and not let anyone stop her.

Her relationships with her grandmother and Harry were sweet to a certain point. But her bond with her aunt, Helen, and her uncle, Julius, was very nice.

One thing that surprised me was how most of the characters had British accents instead of Australian ones. But that was because back in the late 19th century, wealthy Australian settlers were still taught to speak with proper English accents.

I will admit that some parts were a bit slow and hard to follow. But most of it was good.

Overall, I enjoyed My Brilliant Career. It was interesting learning about wealthy Australian life in the late 1800s.
