A young Californian woman named Susan Murphy is preparing for her wedding to this guy, Derek Dietl. She is spending her last night single with her 3 close friends.

The day of the wedding, but before the ceremony, Susan and Derek share a romantic moment together. Despite Susan’s dream of going to Paris for their honeymoon, Derek heavily favors Fresno, California.

Susan feels a bit bummed about this. But what happens after that is even crazier: a meteorite hits her. Luckily, though, she is okay and not hurt.

However, after her father walks her down the aisle, things go out of hand while Susan starts exchanging her vows with Derek. She suddenly grows much bigger to the size of a giant.

Not only does she outgrow her wedding dress that rips up her legs, but she also scares all the other guests away. Worst of all, she ends up destroying the church.

Shortly after, a military man tranquilizes her. Once she wakes up, she is now in a strange environment: a facility for monsters.

Susan is also wearing a uniform. Even more surprising, her hair has changed from dark brown to white.

Right after that, she meets General W.R. Monger. At the advanced age of 89, he is a US army officer in charge of this facility.

When Susan asks to speak to her family, General Monger won’t let her. That is because all outside contact is strictly forbidden.

While Susan is feeling down and hopeless, she meets her inmates: Dr. Herbert Cockroach Ph.D., who is a human-cockroach hybrid scientist; B.O.B. (Benzoate Ostylezene Bicarbonate), a brainless, indestructible gelatinous mass of blue goo, the Missing Link, a prehistoric 20,000-year-old fish-ape hybrid, and Insectosaurus, a 350-feet tall bug mutated by nuclear radiation.

Meanwhile, in outer space, there is a wicked alien named Gallaxhar. Knowing about this powerful substance called quantonium, he sends a robotic monster to Earth so that it can get it.

In Washington D.C., President Hathaway alerts his White House staff of the dangers going on. But each time he does, a lady in the room screams. Eventually, President Hathaway asks her to leave the room.

Later, there is congested traffic heading out of San Francisco toward the Golden Gate Bridge. However, leaving the city is actually just a suggestion – not a requirement.

But when Susan shows up as her giant self, everyone on the Golden Gate Bridge panics, crashes into each other, and even runs out of their cars. However, unlike her monster inmates, Susan tries to save the people on the bridge.

That evening, Susan reunites with her parents. Regardless of her huge size, her mom and dad still love her for who she is.

Unfortunately, Derek is no longer interested in her. Thus, he breaks up with her, leaving her heart broken.

In spite of that, Susan realizes that her life was actually better without Derek, even as a giant “monster.”

But things start to take a turn for their worst when Insectosaurus is shot. If that’s not bad enough, Susan is also kidnapped by Gallaxhar.

What is that going to lead to?

The humor, fast pacing, and concept contributed to keeping my attention all the way through. The multiple twists and turns enhanced my experience even more.

I laughed several times throughout this movie. Aside from the woman screaming after the president shared dangerous news – the scene where the president played the instrumental “Axel F” song on the piano to attempt first contact after the robot monster came to Earth made me crack up.

Susan was very likable, sweet, relatable, and believable. Her relationship with her monster inmates was honestly sweet.

This film might be intended for kids or at least people of all ages. But having an adult protagonist dealing with grown-up situations, like relationships and marriage, makes this easily appeal to mature audiences.

I even thought I heard a few uses of the D-word. So, if you have young children, be mindful of their maturity levels.

Overall, I enjoyed Monsters vs Aliens. Its nostalgic moments from the 2000s can make adults enjoy this as much as kids.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
