But because Michael can’t sleep, he is playing basketball. His dad lets him go for a few more shots.
Years have passed. Unfortunately, James Jordan has kicked the bucket.
Not only that, but Michael decides to retire from basketball. Instead, he pursues a career in baseball.
Meanwhile, in outer space, an amusement park called Moron Mountain is suffering. But when the leader, Mr. Swackhammer, meet his little minion aliens, the Nerdlucks, they tell him about the Looney Tunes.
Mr. Swackhammer commands that they kidnap all of them to become attractions. Therefore, they procceed to do as he says.
The scene switches to Bugs Bunny, who is just going about his day. When the Nerdlucks find him, he acts like he hasn’t heard of Bugs Bunny.
Little, do they know that he IS the bunny that he was describing. Yet the Nerdlucks agree to challenge Bugs and the rest of the Looney Tunes to play basketball.
However, when Bugs points out that they can’t make themselves bigger, they prove him wrong once he and the other Looney Tunes are out of sight. They transform from cute little aliens with high voices into big monstrous aliens with deep booming voices.
Once that’s complete, the Nerdlucks observe various different basketball players and their unique talents. Then they use some supernatural items to gain those skills.
After that, they change their team name from the Nerdlucks to the Monstars.
Realizing that they need some help, the Looney Tunes bring Michael into their universe. Although he is resistant at first, Michael eventually helps them and forms the Tune Squad – the name of their team.
Shortly after that, a female rabbit named Lola Bunny shows up. Bugs develops feelings for her.
Then Michael has the Tunes gather different basketball gear from his house. That includes his shorts.
But while they are there, some trouble happens between them and an animated bad guy. Luckily, Michael’s kids help the Tunes and promise to keep the game a secret.
Michael teaches them basketball as much as possible. However, when the game between the Tunes and the Monstars finally begins, crazy things happen.
The Tunes are worried that they won’t win. But can they still succeed, no matter what?
As one of the very few people who actually enjoyed the 2021 sequel and found it hilarious, I was hoping for that kind of humor in this one too. Sadly, I stood corrected.
Regardless, the lack of slapstick humor that the sequel had did not stop me from enjoying this movie. In fact, there was a lot of content in this film that helped me understand the sequel even better. An example is the team name, the “Tune Squad.”
The character development was also strong. The Looney Tunes stayed true to themselves while also enhancing the plot. Michael was very likable and had a lot of celebrity allies involved, including Bill Murray. He was also patient and helpful to the Looney Tunes.
Despite the strengths, I will say that parts of this movie became kind of boring. I think it was because there was not enough tension or the pacing was a bit too slow.
Overall, I thought Space Jam was decent. Unlike with the sequel, my opinion actually falls in the majority with this one.
I give this film 3.5 out of 5 stars.
