A British man named George Hardy has a big flock of sheep that he interacts with everyday. He even reads to them at night.

He also identifies each sheep and how they are unique. That even includes a lamb born in the winter, who is unfortunately, disliked by the other sheep because of that.

In addition, there are other significant people in the town. One is a young journalist called Elliot Matthews. He wants to document a “festival” that no one attended.

The sheep also talk to each other. They enjoy learning about the human world. But they think that at the end of a sheep’s life, it turns into a cloud.

One night, a butcher named Ham comes. But George doesn’t want him there.

The next morning, the sheep find George dead. There are also blue and green marks on his hands.

A few sheep conclude that someone killed him. So, they decide to investigate. The sheep include Lily and Mopple.

However, Officer Derry thinks that George had a heart attack. But the citizens believe that he was actually murdered – specifically with poison.

So, there are some possible victims gathered. They include an older woman and lawyer named Lydia Harbottle, Ham the butcher, Reverand Hillcoate, innkeeper Beth Pennock, and George’s neighbor, Caleb.

At some point, they are all with Officer Derry. Shortly after, a young woman named Rebecca Hampstead arrives and reveals that she is George’s daughter. George had two twins who lost their mother in childbirth. Because of his situation then, he put both children up for adoption.

Due to some hints around town, both the sheep and humans suspect that Rebecca murdered George. So, she gets arrested.

However, she says that she wasn’t there when George was murdered. So, who was the real killer?

I deeply admired the concept of the story, where sheep solve a murder mystery. I also appreciated the way it was done in a family-friendly matter. Instead of guns, toxic items were involved.

All the sheep were likable. I especially felt sorry for the winter lamb.

Additionally, I found it interesting that the sheep had different accents. Some were English or Scottish. Lily had an American accent, though. She was voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who is from the United States.

One issue I had was how the setting wasn’t clear enough. The name of the town was said. But until I went on Wikipedia, I assumed that this film took place in Australia. Hugh Jackman is Australian himself. Even though he does a good British accent, I could hear some of his Australian accent when he spoke or narrated.

But that’s quite minor. The biggest strength was finding out who poisoned George.

Because this movie is a murder mystery, there are lots of twists and turns. You could get surprised many times.

Even though this is a comedy, I didn’t laugh a lot. But its lighthearted tone and plot made up for that.

Overall, I enjoyed The Sheep Detectives. It is a fun watch that people of all ages can see.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
