A young woman named Kara is waking up thanks to the dog, Krypto. Sometime this week, Kara will be turning 23. She plans to go to as many parties in honor of her birthday.

However, Superman calls her on a video screen. He is a bit concerned that she is having trouble adjusting to Earth.

Meanwhile, somewhere in outer space, a guy named Elias Knoll and his wife are battling a wicked alien. Unfortunately, they both meet their demises, leaving their young teen daughter, Ruthye, orphaned.

However, Ruthye does not let her parents’ deaths get in the way of her life. In fact, she meets Kara at a club where she is dancing, and tries to warn her about what is happening.

Then suddenly, a bunch of villains start attacking the club. Luckily, Kara is able to fight each one of them off.

Ruthye want her to assist in getting vengeance on those responsible for her parents’ deaths. But Kara refuses.

Sometime later, Kara is in a field near a spaceship. Ruthye also shows up against Kara’s will.

Not only that, but Krypto also runs toward the spaceship – only to get hit with an arrow.

On the aircraft, an alien tries to do what she can to save him. Sadly, she says that he will unlikely live longer than 3 more days.

After having to fight more space pirates, Kara finds out how to get to the planet, Bilquis. So, she boards a space bus, along with some hideous, and even uncivilized aliens. Ruthye also comes on – except that she gets attacked. So, Kara fights for her.

But she ends up flying out of the space bus and float in outer space… unconscious. Luckily, the sun revives her. Even better, she now has superpowers that make fighting bad guys easier.

However, Ruthye is kidnapped and locked away in a ship somewhere far away. But Kara frees her. She is also now known as Supergirl as revealed on her outfit. In addition, she sets other captive women free.

But stakes continue to rise. What will happen next?

I will admit how this movie did not engage me as much as the trailer for it did. The trailer seemed promising with a lot of action and adventure.

But the actual film had too much set up at the beginning. Yes, I understand that the setting up is important. However, I wished I had seen more action with Supergirl rather  than just Kara earlier on.

That being said, I do appreciate the amount of conflict and high levels of tension. In fact, the fighting scenes did engage me a lot. There were even some moments of suspense where I worried what was going to happen next.

I will also say that I found both Kara and Ruthye quite likable. I even think they made a good duo.

I will also add how the aliens design looks pretty realistic with the up-to-date CGI technology. I even admired how they varied in appearances and had different species, as well.

But overall, I thought, Supergirl was just okay. Many other sources show that it has mixed reviews, too.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars.
