A news reporter named Evan Baxter is elected for Congress. This means he needs to leave his hometown of Buffalo, New York, and move near Washington D.C.

He and his family settle in a D.C suburb called Huntsville, located in Virginia. Although his 3 sons missed their old home, they began to quickly adapt to their new residence.

The youngest child, Ryan, tries to play with a stray dog, which Evan obviously stops him from doing. After the dog leaves, Ryan says that he wants to keep him as a pet.

Evan’s wife, Joan, wants to keep the whole family together. And Evan wants to change the world, especially now as a Congressman.

On his first day of work, Evan meets a lot of nice co-workers. He really gets to know Rita, Marty, and Eugene, all of whom he becomes close to.

And then there’s Congressmen Chuck Long – he is the boss of everyone in Congress.

However, once Evan comes home, he comes across the strange boxes that he never ordered. They consist of various ancient tools and gopher wood.

In addition, 8 vacant lots in his area were purchased under his name. This especially stresses out Joan, who is worried that the family will lose a lot of money.

And then there’s this number that keeps showing up everywhere: 614. Even crazier, God comes to Earth and tells Evan what is going to happen.

There is going to be a big flood on midday of September 22nd. Evan needs to build an ark to save everyone. Of course, Evan finds this insane.

And that news is nothing compared to what Evan experiences next – animals of all types come to him. This really shocks his co-workers and particularly Congressman Long.

The wildest part of this changed actually alters Evan’s appearance. His hair begins to grow longer and a beard starts to form.

Not only is Evan unhappy about that, but so are his coworkers. But no matter how much Evan tries to cut his hair or shave, everything grows back instantly.

It’s official – Evan is turning into Noah – the biblical figure who built an ark to get everyone away to safety during a flood. However, that ruins his relationship with his co-workers and his family.

But can things get better eventually?

Despite this movie’s not-so-great reviews, I actually enjoyed it a lot. It especially had a lot of funny moments that made me laugh hard.

In addition, I found tying in the biblical elements to be impressive. That must have involved extensive research.

And even though this movie came out in 2007, I found it interesting that the filmmakers were already using inclusive casting for God. He was played by Morgan Freeman – and he did a really good job.

Freeman portrayed God as calm, patient, and gentle, even when his plans caused a little chaos. And until a certain point in the story, only Evan could see or hear Him.

Evan was a likable protagonist, too. He had a lot of strengths and ambitions, but also some flaws.

That brings me to my next thought: there were a few minor issues I had with this movie.

One is how all of Evan’s sons looked pretty similar with their hair and faces. Yes, they were brothers – and yes, the shaggy hairstyle on boys was a big trend in the mid- late 2000s. But I had trouble telling each one apart even though their names did not sound similar.

The last several minutes also felt slow at times. I’m obviously not going to spoil the ending, though.

But otherwise, I really liked Evan almighty. The multiple twists and turns made it particularly exciting.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
