Movie quotes can mean a lot. Some are inspirational. Some teach morals.
And some are just relatable to each individual. That is what this post is all about. Well, at least for some of them.
Below are quotes from different films that stand out to me for various reasons.
1: “Hi, I’m Anxiety. Where shall I put my stuff?” – Anxiety, Inside Out 2
After Riley turned 13, and therefore officially entered her teenage years, she gained new emotions. One of them includes Anxiety.
This quote stands out to me because I also suffer from anxiety from time to time. In addition, when I go to places, such as doctors’ offices, I often ask where I should put my stuff.
2: “Eric, did you just say the f-word?” – Mr. Garrison, The South Park Movie
After seeing the Terrance and Philip movie, the kids have learned foul language and used it at school. And, of course, Mr. Garrison does not approve of it.
I admire how he responds differently than how an adult in real life would react if a kid swore, especially if it was an 8-year-old. But I guess that’s one of the biggest features of cartoons – things don’t have to be realistic. I also find Mr. Garrison’s reaction to Cartman cursing funny.
3: “Do the roar.” – some little boy, Shrek Forever After
Shrek and Fiona are hosting a birthday party for their babies. During it, a guy brings his son, who asks Shrek to do his signature ogre roar. Shrek refuses. However, the kid keeps asking. Yet Shrek won’t roar. At some point, too many mishaps occur and everyone at the event chants for him to roar. Already angry, Shrek roars loudly. Then the guests cheer.
This quote stands out to me for a few reasons. One, the whole scene centered around the request is funny. Two, Shrek hasn’t roared since the sequel. He does not roar once in the third installment. Three, the way the boy says it is cute.
4: “Well, the quicker you’re into it, the quicker you’re out.” – Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Returns
During the musical number, “A Cover is Not the Book,” Mary Poppins suggests that Jack tells a tale about an illiterate king. Jack feels that it is too long. But then Mary Poppins says the quote above.
I cannot emphasize how much I agree with that line. The sooner you get something done, the faster you will complete it. This can mean chores, homework, or any kind of task or work.
5: “You’re a wizard, Harry.” – Hagrid, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s (Philosopher’s) Stone
After an entire miserable childhood with his abusive relatives, Harry meets Hagrid, who is a keeper of the grounds at Hogwarts. Hagrid hints to Harry that his parents were a wizard and witch. Then he tells him that he’s a wizard.
This quote stands out to me because it shows an orphan who’s had a tough life finally being introduced to a world where he will meet others like him. Harry’s life is going to change for the better.
6: “Everyone go home. Where are your parents? Put some clothes on.” – Ming, Turning Red
After Mei fails the ritual that would have removed her red panda transformation power, because she decided to keep it, she leaves home to go to the 4*Town concert. But before that, her family is trying to pull her back. This causes her to fling them away, thus breaking her mom’s panda spirit necklace. Ming, Mei’s mother, gets upset. The panda spirit then goes back into her. She transforms into a giant red panda–taller than a skyscraper. Then she heads to the concert and gets mad at Mei. She also gives the other kids there a hard time about being there, especially unsupervised and/or underdressed.
I don’t know why I like this quote. Maybe one of the reasons is because it’s not usual for concert venues to admit unaccompanied minors. Even back in 2002, the year the film takes place, I can’t imagine that children as young as 13 would be allowed at concerts without adult supervision. But then again, it’s only a cartoon.
7: “You want a man with hair, you marry a monkey.” – Golde, Fiddler on the Roof
When Tevye arranges for his oldest daughter, Tzeitel, to marry a man named Lazar Wolf, she is resistant to that. One of the reasons is because he’s bald. Her mother then says the line above.
When I first saw this movie, I thought Golde was being racist. But I think she meant something else, like a buffoon or an unpleasant person. Plus, Tzeitel should have known better at her age than to discriminate against somebody for having no hair–especially if it was not his choice.
8: “What are you doing in my swamp?!” – Shrek, Shrek
While Shrek is just trying to enjoy his dinner, a bunch of fairytale intruders come. And as a cranky ogre who wants to be alone, that angers him a lot.
I think the quote mentioned above is funny. Thus, it’s memorable.
9: “Why the long face? You turned into a baby?” – A guy, Avengers: Endgame
When the avengers are testing out a time portal, Ant-Man is their guinea pig. As he goes into the portal, he comes back as a kid, an old man, and a baby. Later, someone asks him the questions above.
This line is funny, because I think Ant-Man’s reaction was realistic. Therefore, it’s memorable.
10: “Put that thing back where it came from! Or so help me!” – Mike, Monster’s Inc.
While Mike and Sully are arguing about taking Boo back home where she belongs, Mike says the line above. But that attracts attention from the other employees. Mike claims that he’s rehearsing a scene for the company play called, “Put that thing back where it came from! Or so help me!”
A lot of people actually find this quote significant–not just me. In fact, there was a special feature in the DVD of Monster’s Inc. where Mike, Sully, and all the other monsters in that company perform this show. You can also find it on YouTube.
Conclusion
Quotes can be remembered for various reasons. I hope you enjoyed my list of them.
