A young girl named Kayley is spending time with her parents in the kingdom of Camelot. What makes her unique is her dream of becoming a knight just like her father, Sir Lionel.
Sir Lionel and his wife, Juliana, tell Kayley the story of how Camelot used to suffer. But that changed when King Arthur finally pulled that special sword out of the stone. The sword is called Excalibur.
At some point, Sir Lionel must meet with King Arthur at the Round Table. Unfortunately, there is an evil sorcerer named Sir Ruber who is mad for power. He tries to kill King Arthur—but Sir Lionel steps in to protect the monarch. Sadly, that results in him meeting his demise.
Poor Kayley had her hopes up of her dad coming home. A funeral is held for Sir Lionel. There, Kayley and Juliana are told that they are always welcome at Camelot.
Ten years later, Kayley still yearns to become a night. However, her mother is against it for various reasons. Yet Kayley remains desperate.
However, Sir Ruber wants to take everyone back to the dark times. He even uses a supernatural effect to turn innocent beings into his army. But Excalibur is lost in the forbidden forest nearby. This infuriates Sir Ruber.
When Sir Ruber and his men kidnap Juliana, Juliana tells Kayley to save herself. After hesitating since she does not want to lose her mom, Kayley listens and flees. But she is mainly determined to find Excalibur.
While escaping, Kayley meets this blind hermit guy, Garrett. Garrett can be difficult and strongly prefers to be alone. Nevertheless, he is eventually willing to help Kayley and join her on her journey.
Along the way, Kayley and Garrett meet this two-headed dragon with hardly any strengths. It consists of two brothers called Cornwall and Devon, who often fail to get along with each other.
Sometime later, Garrett reveals how he became blind. When he was young, he worked as a stable boy in Camelot. Unfortunately, there was a fire. After saving a horse from the flames, Garrett ended up getting kicked in the head. That is why he cannot see.
The next day, Sir Ruber’s men attack Kayley, Garrett, and the two-headed dragon. Luckily, Kayley beats them. She then develops romantic feelings for Garrett. He becomes infatuated with her, as well.
Before they know it, Kayley and Garrett find Excalibur—only for Sir Ruber to take it. Even worse, he kidnaps Kayley.
Can she and her friends still save Camelot, though?
Regardless of what the title suggests, I am glad that this is not another retelling of King Arthur. Merlin makes an appearance. But Guinevere does not. Yet that does not bother me since the story focuses on Kayley.
Kayley was portrayed well as a strong female lead. I especially admired her dream to become a knight instead of marrying a prince.
In fact, she dresses quite masculine with a tunic and tights rather than a long dress. It doesn’t matter that that could have never happened during medieval times. It shows strength, rebellion, and uniqueness.
Another perk is the featuring of a blind character—particularly having the protagonist fall in love with him. Even though this came out in the 90s, it’s an important step to inclusion of underrepresented groups of people.
The songs were exciting, beautiful, or even funny. A humorous example was when Cornwall and Devon sang about how their lives would be better if they didn’t have each other.
I will admit that I thought the design of Sir Ruber was a little too scary. He also looked less like a human compared to the other characters.
Yes, he’s the villain—and that should be clear to the audience. But I think the character artists could have come up with another way to make it obvious that he’s evil, yet also a human. I was also surprised that he was voiced by Gary Oldman. Gary Oldman must have disguised his voice when portraying Sir Ruber.
Although the movie is not even an hour and a half long, some parts felt a little too slow. Yet that’s a minor issue.
Overall, I enjoyed Quest for Camelot. It is a nice film with good songs, characters, and high levels of tension.
I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
