The film begins with some lips in a black background, introducing the audience to the premise of the show. Simultaneously, the opening credits come up, as well.
The scene switches to a church where a wedding ceremony has just concluded. Among the guests is a young couple, Brad Majors and Janet Weiss. They are also engaged.
One night, Brad and Janet are driving in the woods – only for their car to break down and not be able to move. After they leave their vehicle, they notice a big castle nearby. Their goal is for someone to let them use their phone. That way they can call for help.
The door is answered to a creepy looking Butler called Riff Raff. He leads Brad and Janet to a party that is happening inside.
Aside from Riff Raff, they meet this hot female dancer with short fuchsia hair, Columbia. There is also Riff Raff’s sister and servant, Magenta, who has thick, bushy, curly hair.
And their biggest introduction is to a transvestite named Dr. Frank-N-Furter. But Janet and Brad are still desperate to use a phone.
Nevertheless, the servants there undress Brad and Janet down to their undergarments. But Janet still gets to wear her underskirt.
Yet the 2 need to go into an elevator without their clothes on. In addition, they are forced to walk into the surrounding crowd in their lingerie.
A special show begins where a mummy is brought to life. But that mummy turns out to be a good looking man wearing nothing but a metallic Speedo. His name is Rocky.
Dr. Frank-N-Furter promises Rocky that he will make him as manly as possible. Then an old handicapped man with a bandaged head named Eddie comes. However, Dr. Frank-N-Furter kills him.
At some point, after being given separate bedrooms, Janet and Brad end up having intercourse with different people. Although they are shocked and stressed out at first, they eventually accept their affairs.
Janet is with Rocky. And in spite of her discomfort at first, she is willing to let him touch her in various ways.
Sometime later, Magenta finds out about this. So, she summons everyone to the dinner table, even if they are just in their undergarments or bathrobes.
Dr. Frank-N-Furter even makes it look like a special occasion. The servants bring out meat and prepare to cut it. Dr. Frank-N-Furter even puts on a party hat and hastily sings “Happy Birthday” to Rocky as do many of the others. But they stop after the third stanza and everybody gets a slice of meat.
Then they find out the real reason they were called to the table. Eddie shares his tragic backstory and includes lots of details in the song, “Eddie.”
To everybody’s shock afterwards, he reveals his mutilated remains. That includes an actual dead body under the dinner table.
Poor Janet is disturbed and screams and runs away. When she relies on Rocky to comfort her, Dr. Frank-N-Furter becomes deeply jealous.
Shortly after, he uses a Medusa button to turn everybody else into nude statues. Then he puts on a show in a theater, puts dance costumes on the others, and revives them. They each participate in a musical number with him.
And things just get crazier.
Regardless of the word, horror, in the title ,this movie is not scary at all. However, it is rated R for sexual content, brief nudity, blood, and swearing. But there are no uses of the F-word.
A good percentage of the musical numbers were memorable. They were all in the style of 70s pop songs.
Some of them were a little bit too long. But others were quite fun. The best ones include “Eddie,” “The Time Warp,” and “[D-word] it Janet.” I actually already knew the song, “Eddie” from a YouTube video. It was an animated video by the channel, Eddsworld, using their Ed and characters and giving them high, munchkin-like voices for the song.
I also admired the costumes and makeup worn by those in the castle. It’s made them feel authentic and paranormal, even without CGI.
Unfortunately, this movie also had an even number of drawbacks. One part was the opening with the lips and the black background. Not only was it kind of creepy, but it also lagged and took forever. I even skipped some of it just to get to the scene after it.
In addition, some other parts were a bit slow. But the last several minutes were the worst for me.
I’m not gonna spoil the ending. But I will say that it got boring, confusing, and left too many loose ends unresolved. And that’s why I ended up not enjoying the movie as much as I hoped.
Overall, I thought The Rocky Horror Picture Show was just okay. If the last minutes resolved what would have satisfied me, then I would have considered this film decent.
But I give it 3 out of 5 stars.
