I saw this in the theater at a kid. Like others, I noticed that it had a lot of similarities to Disney’s The Lion King. A big one was the plot.
A cow named Otis lives a care-free life on a farm. Unfortunately, his father dies and he is now in charge. That means he has more responsibilities.
Although Barnyard didn’t perform very well, it did have memorable moments. Below are the top picks:
1: The cow tipping
At some point during the film, a little boy and his friends tip a cow and laugh about it. Later, Otis does the same back to that kid and laughs about it.
These moments are one of the few funny parts in this movie, even though cow tipping would be cruel in real. It was particularly humorous when Otis gave the child a taste of his own medicine and said, “And that’s called boy tipping!” Not surprisingly, the kid screamed.
2: When Ben sang “I Won’t Back Down”
Shortly before his death, Ben plays the guitar and sings the specific song. It’s brief, but pretty. It might have even set up the fact that he was going to kick the bucket soon.
3: When Otis and his pals got “caught” by the police
After getting revenge on the boy who tipped the cows, Otis and his friends are driving away. However, the cops flash their lights behind them. The police also assume that it’s a bunch of drunk teenage boys driving.
But when they find the “suspects” as cows grazing and mooing, they leave them alone. I actually found that creative.
4: The rules for the animals
Ben the bull set some guidelines for the animals. 1, no swimming in the pond. 2, no watching TV. 3, standing on two legs is only permitted when humans aren’t looking.
Regardless of these rules, it was funny to see some if the creatures watch a sporting event “with” the farmer… until he turned around. But the animals were out of sight.
5: The 13-year-old dog
Although it’s a minor moment, at the animal meeting, Ben announces that it’s the dog’s birthday and that he is now 13. You likely know that’s old for a dog. But I like how he was very wrinkly, crooked, and blowing a party blower.
Conclusion
These parts are really the only strengths of this movie. I don’t have any plans to rewatch it.
But if you’re a parent to young children, they might enjoy it. There may be additional scenes that make them laugh.
