A bunch of high school seniors are out late at night, trying to pull some pranks. Among them includes popular jock Landon Carter.
They all pressure this boy to jump off a height and into some shallow water. Unfortunately, that kid gets injured. Not only that, but the police also show up.
Landon tries to escape while driving his car. However, he is drunk and hits a barrier.
The next day, presumably after coming home from the police station, Landon gets questioned by his mom about what happened last night. But he refuses to talk about it. So then his mother suggests getting his dad involved, which Landon promptly resists.
At school, Landon meets with his principal. In order to avoid expulsion, Landon must perform certain community service activities. The major ones include tutoring disadvantaged younger students and participating in the school’s play. Landon especially dreads the latter.
Regardless of that, though, Landon notices this pretty girl, Jamie Sullivan. She is the local church’s reverend’s daughter who always dresses modestly. Even though Landon has known her since kindergarten, this is the first time he is interested in getting to know her even more.
Not surprisingly, particularly due to to his lack of interest in acting, Landon struggles to remember his lines for the upcoming show. Jamie, however, is willing to help him – but he cannot fall in love with her under any circumstances.
Even Jamie’s father disapproves of Landon. Although Landon does go to Jamie’s house to rehearse his lines with her, Mr. Sullivan wants nothing to do with him otherwise.
Yet Landon starts developing feelings for Jamie. But he ends up going off of her in front of his friends. Therefore, he continues to tutor and rehearse for the play on his own.
On the opening night of the play, Jamie surprises everyone with her beautiful singing voice. Landon even kisses her on the lips, which isn’t actually part of the show.
Shocked, Jamie decides to avoid Landon for a bit. But then he surprises her with a new sweater.
However, Landon’s ex, Belinda, gets so jealous that she photoshops a picture of Jamie’s head onto a sexy lady’s body. Even worse, everyone at school gets pictures of it and laughs at Jamie.
The poor girl is so humiliated that she actually cries. Luckily, though, Landon is there to comfort her and take the blame for it.
Sometime later, Landon asks Jamie out. But Jamie declined since her dad doesn’t allow her to date, even though she’s 18.
The good news, though, is that her father says yes. He sees how kind he was to Jamie.
Their first date is a lot of fun. Jamie gets to do certain things to do that she has always wanted to do, like get a tattoo.
On their second date, though, when Landon asks Jamie about what she wants to do with her future, she reveals that she is actually sick with Leukemia. So, she has no plans for her future.
Landon is disappointed that she never told him. Therefore, their date ends badly.
But can things improve for both of them before Jamie kicks the bucket?
I was quite surprised with how much this movie kept me engaged. One aspect I deeply admire about it is the concept: a popular boy falls in love with a less popular girl. It is a unique twist to an unpopular kid develops romantic feelings for a popular girl.
What brings me to my next thought: i was astounded with how beautiful Jamie’s singing voice was. She was played by Mandy Moore, who also works as a singer aside from an actress. And she was the same age as her character.
The actor who portrayed Landon, Shane West, was about 24 when this movie was shot. But the makeup did help him look younger.
All the characters were well-developed developed and believable. The romantic chemistry between Landon and Jamie was also credible. It showed both their ups and downs rather than an ideal, perfect relationship.
The pacing was normally quick, although some parts did lag. Those were the moments with less conflict, yet I understand why that was necessary.
But the beginning scene made its major turning point once that boy got injured. I was a bit worried that there wasn’t going to be enough tension.
Overall, I enjoyed A Walk to Remember. It was a good watch with early 2000s vibes.
I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
